A Day In The Life Of Millo Salgado – An Outstanding Mobile Photographer

Welcome to our very exciting column on theappwhisperer.com. This section entitled ‘A day in the life of …’ and this is where we take a look at some hugely influential, interesting and accomplished individuals in the mobile photography world. People that we think you will love to learn more about.

This is our sixty fourth installment of the series, if you have missed our previous interviews, please go here. Today, we are featuring Millo Salgado, an Architect, born in Colima, México, a small city near the Pacific Coast. Millo was born in 1972 and since then the sea has been near him, both physically and in his great images. Millo has loved photography since his years of college and possibly even before. He loves painting too, and music. He says, ‘music is always around me and has to do a lot with my captions’.

Millo’s mobile photography has been exhibited extensively in Spain, Mexico, and Italy (see below). He has also been featured in many articles and interviews including Shooter Mag, JUXT and of course, theappwhisperer.com.

Read more about Millo in the following interview. You can find all the links to the apps mentioned at the end of this article.

(If you would like to be interviewed for our new ‘A day in the life of …’ section, just send an email to [email protected], and we’ll get it set up.)

First Things First

Joanne – Let’s start at the beginning of the day, how does your day start?

Millo – My day starts with my kids. I help my wife with them, take them to school. But first I check my iPhone, while I’m still in bed, especially political news of my country, México.

Magic Hour

Joanne – Do you like to head out and take photographs early on?

Millo – Not really. In fact while I’m at work (I’m an architect) I don’t shoot that much, but when I’m at the beach, very often you see, I wake up early and go outside with my iPhone.

Photographer vs Mobile Photographer

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0412’ – Default Camera, Snapseed

Joanne – How did the transition from traditional photographer to mobile photographer develop? (pardon the pun).

Millo – It’s hard for me, to tell you the truth, to separate iPhoneography from photography in general. I love photography no matter which camera you use. So for me it is the same with my Canon, my GoPro and my iPhone, but I have to admit the iPhone is more intimate(?), it is faster, easy to carry on and people don’t notice you that much.

New Apps

Joanne – Do you like to download new apps regularly?

Millo – Yes, if they catch my eye, but then I don’t use them very often because of Snapseed…;)

Updates

Joanne – How often do you update your existing apps?

Millo – Always do when an update comes.

Location, Location, Location

Joanne – Where’s your favorite place in the world for a shoot?

Millo – Any beach really, but specially two. One is called Cuyutlán, the other one Miramar. But iPhoneography is new, so I haven’t been in a lot of different beaches… still.

Tools Of The Trade

media_1351519923050.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0522’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – Do you also use iPhone photography tool apps, such as The Photographer’s Ephemeris and if so do you use it to plan your shoots?

Millo – Not really, no.

Favorite Apps

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0523’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – What are your favorite, at the moment, iPhoneography apps?

Millo – Hipstamatic and Snapseed are on top of the list, and I also like lo-mob, super retro, camera+, plasticbullet, blur fx and iris.

Sharing

Joanne – Where do you like to upload your photographs? Flickr, Instagram?

Millo – On Flickr lately. I think Instagram is becoming a social network like Facebook, not only for photography, and I don’t like it. Sometimes I feel I have to leave IG, but I’ve made a lot of great friends you see.

Frequency

Joanne – Do you take photographs with your iPhone everyday?

Millo – Almost. At least one shot for sure!

Favorite Subjects

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0701’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

Millo – Water of course, and kids. Kids are fantastic to photograph, they don’t care at all about the camera.

Teaching

media_1351520112217.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0710’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – How did the teaching side come along?

Millo – I think I’m not very good at it! You know, when I start editing, I see the photo as a canvas, and I start painting, but never realized what filter, what amount of contrast I use, shadows… It is hard for me to even remember the apps! I just paint you know? And it is not as if I do a lot of editing, but when I do I don’t care what I’m doing I just see what’s happening so when somebody ask me how do I did it, a lot of times I don’t know the correct answer.

Top Five Tips

media_1351520148222.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0741’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – What are your top five tips for iPhone photography?

Millo – I don’t think I have! Of course, you have to find your favorite camera, could be the native camera, or hipsta, or 645 PRO, the one you are comfortable with. And then you have to think if you want to go just with photography or if you want to go further into editing. There’s a story behind every photo, it’s up to you the way you choose to tell that story. And also I found out that people are less aggressive with video cameras than photos, so when I’m shooting I act as if I’m taking a video, not photos, and works always!

Editing

media_1351520184847.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0779’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – Do you edit images on your iPhone or do you prefer to do that on a desktop/laptop?

Millo – I prefer the iPad. I use the iPhone but not that much, and that’s because I shoot but I don’t upload or edit instantly, just a few occasions. I just start to see my roll when I’m at home at night, sometimes could pass a couple of days before I go check my roll of photos. In my laptop I use Snapseed, and when it comes to DSLR or GoPro, I like Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro.

Videography

Joanne – Do you enjoy videography with your iPhone?

Millo – Yes, you know, with my little kids, is fun! But I prefer photography.

The Future Of Mobile Photography

media_1351520257574.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0921’ – Default Camera, Snapseed

Joanne – Where do you see the future of iPhone photography?

Millo – I hope there is no more iPhoneography thing and that this kind of photography in the future can be in exhibitions among “serious” cameras. I dunno how can’t explain this! That I can edit an hipsta shot using Silver Efex or Lightroom and not being banned!

Popularity

media_1351520339505.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_0972’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – Why do you think it is so popular?

Millo – It has to be fashion and traveling perhaps? Maybe I didn’t understand the question very well.

Worldwide Phenomena?

media_1351520377855.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_1017’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – Do you think it’s country specific, are some nations more clued up?

Milo – I think so. I mean I see exhibits of iphoneography all over the world but not in Mexico. Hope one day we will have some!

iPhone 5

media_1351520410123.png

© Millo Salgado – ‘IMG_4473’ – Hipstamatic, Snapseed

Joanne – Are you happy with the iPhone 5?

Millo – I love the iPhone the way it is, but of course I love that the camera is getting bigger.

TheAppWhisperer.com

Joanne – What do you think of Joanne and theappwhisperer.com?

Millo – Any site this good and well done it is a pleasure, and I know for sure that the person behind this project must be brilliant. So Joanne is brilliant and full of passion about it. She’s doing a fantastic job. And I thank her.

Joanne – Thank you so much Millo.

I was so excited to see this interview! Being an ocean lover myself, Millo’s images really, really sing to my soul! 😀

Thank you so much Janine! And thank you Joanne so so much. Now that I’m reading it, I wish I could speak (or write) fluid in your language so I can express myself correctly, or better, or… There’s a lot of things I would love to say or express but, you know, I try! But I’m pretty sure you both know what I mean looking at my photos. That is a universal language isn’t it? Thank you so much! Love!
