Welcome to our very exciting column on theappwhisperer.com. This section entitled ‘A day in the life of …’ and this is where we take a look at some hugely influential, interesting and accomplished individuals in the mobile photography world. People that we think you will love to learn more about.

This is our seventy fifth installment of the series, if you have missed our previous interviews, please go here. Today we are featuring Melissa Vincent. Melissa’s interest in mobile art and photography started in April 2011 when she joined instagram. Interest turned into “obsession” and currently over 130,000 people who have been inspired by her iPhone art are following her today.

All of her work is done on the iPhone proving that mobile photography has a place in the art world. Melissa’s photographs have been featured on National Geographic online and the cover of Time Magazine’s First Annual Wireless Issue. She has been interviewed and featured by The Huffington Post for her surreal, southern pieces. She was recently named photographer of the day by Resource Magazine. Melissa’s art works were hung in the Animazing Gallery in Soho in March of 2012 and at the Santa Monica Art Studios for the LA Mobile Arts Festival, the world’s largest mobile arts festival to date. Currently, her work is being shown at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in California.

Melissa loves driving around the country for hours with music and coffee, and usually a sleeping little boy in the backseat, looking for that perfect shot. She always finds interesting opportunities for photos while driving on those long, winding delta roads. Melissa resides in Mississippi with her husband, Matthew, and two sons, Eli and Ari.

Joanne – Lets start at the beginning of the day, how does your day start?

Melissa – I always begin with coffee. I’m not a morning person by choice. I am up helping my kids get ready for the day before sunrise during the week.

Golden Hour…

Joanne – Do you like to head out and take photographs early on?

Melissa – The only reason I will get up early to take photos is if I know there will be fog or snow. Both are uncommon for Mississippi, so I get excited about getting photos in these conditions. Also, when I’m on vacation, I’m always up early exploring new places.

Joanne – How did the transition from traditional photographer to iPhoneographer develop? (pardon the pun)

Melissa – I have always taken photos of vacations and my family, but it never became such a passion of mine until I joined instagram in April 2011. I was amazed at what could be done with photo editing apps on my iPhone. It was also a hobby I could enjoy while being with my kids. The convenience of always having it with me and not having to carry around a heavy dslr was a big factor in my transition too.

Melissa – I downloaded more when I first started experimenting. I don’t have much storage on my iPhone anymore, so I’m more selective now.

Melissa – I believe it will evolve over time. I don’t know if there will be such a distinction between iphoneography and photography eventually. I am excited to see what the future has in store.
