Mobile Art – APPart – Fifth Flickr Group Showcase – TheAppWhisperer

Welcome to our fifth APPart Video Showcase. Bobbi McMurry has curated a wonderful set of images from our Flickr group and she has also selected her three favourite images and written thoughtfully about each one.  I have created a video showcase with the images for your viewing pleasure.  (Foreword by Joanne Carter).

“It’s wonderful to see so many of you pushing your boundaries, experimenting with your apps, technique and subject matter, while tapping the very essence of your creativity. Our growing community brings not only new artists, but also their personal visions and techniques. I hope you’ll spend some time not only viewing this showcase, but also experiencing it  we all have so much to gain from the sharing in our AppArt group!

I’ve highlighted three special pieces contained in the showcase and hope you’ll all take the time to visit each of these artist’s Flickr feeds and get acquainted with more of their work.

Here are the links you need to join our APPart groups:

• Flickr Group (for weekly showcase submissions)

. Flickr APPart Challenge Group

• Facebook Group (for information sharing/discussions)

Huge congratulations to all of this week’s featured APPartists:

Stef Lp, David Booker / BlemishedEye, Jo Sullivan, Pat Brown, Hotel Midnight, Diana Nicholette Jeon, Kate Zari Roberts, Claudia Contreras, thelcf666, Kirsten Fenton, Eraddatz Photo, Juta Jazz, Pat Brown, Lorenka Campos, Meri Walker, Patricia Januszkiewicz, Allison Pistohl, Stefanie L.P.

Stefanie L.P.  / Title: When Birds Cry

Stefanie is one of the few artists in our group creating on an android, and it’s enjoyable seeing her push the boundaries of what seems (to me) a limited, but growing “medium”. There is much to look at in this colorful digital collage. I say collage because of the diverse “cut” imagery used to create this work and applaud how she’s manipulated, painted, and incorporated typography into the composition. The title is curious to me though, and made me stop and consider the work further. I’m a Prince fan, and the song “When Doves Cry” comes to mind, and when I consider the lyrics, this piece seems to come together. (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/prince/whendovescry.html)

Perhaps, this piece has nothing to do with Prince’s song, but that’s one of the special things about art; something lures you in, you spend time exploring and your find your own story hidden inside.

Diana Nicholette Jeon / Title: Some Enchanted Evening

As someone who loves creating in the self-portrait genre, I’m always envious when I see one of Diana’s distinctive works!  “Some Enchanted Evening” is especially beautiful with it’s subtle complimentary palette, seductive bedroom eyes, and voluptuous lips. You think you know where things are headed but then the crazy knitted cap her subject is wearing strikes you. Complete with ears and antlers, the photographic detail is most evident within this strange, unique ivory hat. These tones are carried through in her clothing all wrapped with a strong ivory stroke that encompasses the warm-toned figure. The background’s cool, contrasting palette pushes her figure towards you and the pure white of her eyes grabs you and holds you tight. This piece, like so many of Diana’s, is complimented with very loose line work that ties the piece up like a gift.

Claudia Contreras / Title: Garden Insect Photography

What a lovely composition that Claudia has presented here (despite the enormous creepy crawly subject matter)!  A rhinoceros beetle shown as a scientific specimen, loosely painted in deep, dark color. She’s magnificently eliminated all unnecessary details and presented just enough information to capture you and pull you in for a closer look. My eye is immediately drawn to the bold, flat red on the lower portion of the beetle and the contrasting black that frames and defines the creature.  The stark white strip covered in script makes me feel as if viewing an entomologist’s journal from long ago.
