Firstly, this image just popped out at me when I was doing the search within the Flickr pool for Oct 2015 – we are still playing catch up so that all the hard work that everyone has put in since last year gets looked at!

Secondly, I love the humour of the self portrait. Right away, I can see that Susan doesn’t take herself too seriously – the honesty in the image comes through.

Whilst not perfectly composed (the background slightly askew), the imperfection works in conveying a sense of spontaneity. I love the treatment in black and white as well – what comes across is the parody of a murder thriller like “Fatal Attraction” – at any moment she is going to chop and then boil bunnies!

I feel almost guilty that I am selecting two black and white images to feature. It was not easy when I had all the selections down to the last 3 that I wanted to share and talk about. I chose Armineh’s image “Day 294 – Must Get Well” for the its composition and the emotions that it conveyed to me.

For me, an image is compelling when you see something different each time you look at it. This is evident in Armineh’s submission. At first glance, the self portrait is obvious; however, I was then drawn in to look closer and closer. Her image gave me a sense of discomfort – I had a feeling of something misplaced and not quite right – the complexity in the composition of the image translates that emotion so well. Then I looked at the title and all the dots connected for me. I actually felt enough discomfort to feel unwell.

Whilst each element in the image remain unclear, the near-abstract nature of it, it is the mystery of how it was created that makes me love this image so much. Well done, Armineh!

Through marvellous layering labour, Carolyn creates an almost sanctified, ethereal vision of herself: the aura over her head, the fixed, almost expressionless look of her face… But at the same time, her presence keeps coming back to the earthly plane through the use of more familiar references: a compass, a mail stamp and the envelope, her glasses and even the flag or is it a simple “x”? I have chosen it, because the psychological imagery and artistic composition of all the elements challenge the viewer to discover what’s beneath.

I find this such an elegant and sensual self portrait with the perfect amount and right choice of editing. Her expression and body language is all that is needed to achieve a compelling and seductive portrait that depicts a cinematographic nostalgia and glamour.
