Mobile Photography – StreetWise Showcase – October 2016

For me, photography has become a way of attempting to make sense of the strange world that I see around me. I don’t ever expect to achieve that understanding, but the fact that I am trying comforts me.”  Mikhael Subotzky

Thank you all so much for participating and inspiring us with your incredible photos. As always, it was difficult for us to choose such few images for the showcase from all those that were submitted – such stunning images in both color and black and white.

Welcome, also, to those newer to our street photography community – it is great to have you join us!

As a reminder, we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group’s intention and guidelines  “We believe that it is important to focus on the key aspects of street photography  composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment  rather than relying on too much aping. We therefore feel that aping should be kept to a minimum  cropping, tweaking exposure, colour, adding a grain or texture is ok but we would like to see you steer away from overly app’ed images that are more art-oriented or painterly.”

We hope you will enjoy this inspiring showcase as much as Ilana and I enjoyed putting it together!

A special thank you to Joanne.

If you are a mobile street photographer, please consider joining our growing community.

Apple Launches Dedicated Accessibilty Website and we are Excited!

Share

Apple premiered their Keynote yesterday with a video highlighting their brand new Accessibility website. I was immensely touched by this, not only because I have a disability myself but I have dear friends and family, as many of us do, with disabilities and anything that technology can do to help us all feel and be more involved within this world, is a truly wonderful thing.

This morning, I have spent some time with my audiologist, I have moderate to profound hearing loss and wear hearing aids full time. These are a life line but they do present problems for me, in certain situations.  When using the telephone, I receive a lot of feedback. Unfortunately the digital hearing aids, that I do have (my dear husband purchased these for me two years ago – prior to that it was difficult from birth, although I am an expert at lip-reading), are not ‘Made for iPhone’ and I really hoped they might be. This feature would allow me to manage audio levels from my iPhone and help me when using the telephone, or recording podcasts for example in my work. Both of these are incredibly trying for me to manage. I do have a remote control with various settings and I can reduce background noises in loud places but if I were and I am not in a position to and if you are and you need them, then I would strongly recommend looking for ‘Made for iPhone’ hearing aids. The features are incredible, it is even possible to check the battery status for each aid, these always seem to go at the most inconvenient of times.

I will post some of the features below, the new Accessibility website is truly wonderful. We have a Photo and Accessibility section within TheAppWhisperer and we have a wonderful writer, Luis Perez. He is an Apple Distinguished Educator whose work focuses on accessibility and inclusive design. He received his doctorate in special education from the University of South Florida in 2013 and is the author of Mobile Learning for All from Corwin Press. His work has appeared in THE Journal, The Loop Magazine, and the New York Times Bits Blog. You can read more about Luis here.

Of course, the audiology section is only one part of Apple’s Accessibility website and we will be looking at each section in turn. There really is so much help, for example with autism (I further studied Autism in Children at University), as well as Switch Control, Workout videos and more!

Apple today introduced the thinnest and lightest MacBook Pro ever, along with a breakthrough interface that replaces the traditional row of function keys with a brilliant, Retina-quality Multi-Touch display called the Touch Bar. The new MacBook Pro features Apple’s brightest and most colourful Retina display yet, the security and convenience of Touch ID, a more responsive keyboard, a larger Force Touch trackpad and an audio system with double the dynamic range. It’s also the most powerful MacBook Pro ever, featuring sixth-generation quad-core and dual-core processors, up to 2.3 times the graphics performance over the previous generation, super-fast SSDs and up to four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

The Touch Bar places controls right at the user’s fingertips and adapts when using the system or apps like Mail, Finder, Calendar, Numbers, GarageBand, Final Cut Pro X and many more, including third-party apps. For example, the Touch Bar can show Tabs and Favorites in Safari, enable easy access to emoji in Messages, provide a simple way to edit images or scrub through videos in Photos and so much more.

“This week marks the 25th anniversary of Apple’s first notebook; through the years each generation has introduced new innovations and capabilities, and it’s fitting that this all-new generation of MacBook Pro is the biggest leap forward yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With the groundbreaking new Touch Bar, the convenience of Touch ID, the best Mac display ever, powerful performance, improved audio, blazing fast storage and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity in our thinnest and lightest pro notebook yet, the new MacBook Pro is the most advanced notebook ever made.”

The launch of a new free universal iOS app from Blurb enables you to create a photo book directly from your mobile device. Some of the feature highlights include the facility to pull images directly from your iOS albums into your book where ‘autoflow’ places them into pages. There are three different page layouts to allow you to customise your book, two sizes and two cover types. Captioning is another useful option to add to your images.
