We want a mate who feels like family and a lover who is exotic, surprising. We want to be youthful adventurers and middle-aged mothers. We want intimacy and autonomy, safety and stimulation, reassurance and novelty, coziness and thrills. But we can’t have it all”, says Ariel Levy; the New Yorker writer who had a life that balanced domesticity with intellectual and sexual adventure and then it fell apart, dramatically. This from her memoir ‘The Rules do not Apply’. I have been reading it this week.  Essentially, this book is about the desire to have it all and how that can literally be blown apart. One thing in particular struck me reading this book, Levy does not give herself any compassion, it’s left to the reader to fill that gap. This is a book that (in my opinion) you should order for all the women that you love. Each week, like many of us, I read, view and embrace all that I can around me. I surround myself in the very best of art and of life. Our Mobile Photography and Flickr Group is a good grounding base. Sometimes, when the days have not gone to plan, people have been unpredictable, I know that I can go back to our group and feel nurtured. Because each week your work reaches new heights. Not to say that your work is predictable because it is not, the growing unpredictability tightens the narrative and it is easy to see why the artists featured here have earned a place among the finest mobile photographers working today. We have our freedom and we use it very very well. Thank you!

You may have heard of Dr Megan Poe, she is a 42 year old psychiatrist and associate professor who teaches an undergraduate course on love, which she designed at New York University. It has achieved overwhelming success. The course is called ‘Love Actually’ and attempts to pack as much about the human experience of love in, as is possible. The course leans heavily on the work of Eric Fromm, the psychologist best known for his 1956 book, The Art of Loving, that I mentioned a few weeks ago, here. What I love about the syllabus of this class, is at its core, albeit a psychology class, its emphasis is on love, through art. As described in The Guardian ‘where the psychology inhabits the artwork on a kind of cellular level‘. They look at poets like Rainer Maria Rilke and they study Romeo and Juliet as a way to explore the intensity and emotional urges of adolescent love. What I would bring to this course, if I was exploring it, would be your mobile photography and art, because on a richly transcendent level, it is love, it has been created and produced with love, in those special and sacred moments, when you have made time, for yourselves, which in this analogy could be classed as self love and self love is excruciatingly important. You must love yourselves, for I love you all. I do hope you enjoy this wonderful showcase this week, thank you all for contributing.

Photographs turn the present into past, make contingency into destiny. Whatever their degree of “realism,” all photographs embody a “romantic” relation to reality“, wrote Susan Sontag in the preface to Peter Hujar’s incredible (and now out of print) book ‘Portraits in Life and Death‘. She went on to write, “Photographs instigate, confirm, seal legends. Seen through photographs, people become icons of themselves. Photography converts the world itself into a department store or museum-without-walls in which every subject is depreciated into an article of consumption, promoted into an item for esthetic appreciation. Photography also converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also — wittingly or unwittingly — the recording-angels of death. The photograph-as-photograph shows death. More than that, it shows the sex-appeal of death“. Of course, this much is true. Having lost far to many close friends, the photographs, recordings that I have continue to keep those alive, to me, they help to keep me close, to appreciate the exisitance of love, lost. With mobile photography, it is possible to capture so much and so often, lives are sustained, photography unites in life as in death.

When I view all of your images each week, I feel the love that you have bestowed into each one with your devotion and also with your skills and it warms me and this is one of the many reasons I create this showcase each and every week because I want your work to be seen and to be shown. I count my blessings everyday to be in this position, where I can show the world, your art.

In between many things this week, I have been reading a book entitled “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm.  There’s a paragraph in this book, that I want to share with you all today, because it thoroughly sums up how important love is, over so much and to my mind, when we have love in our heart, we can help others and this is what I try to do every single day. Here’s the paragraph, “The first step to take is to become aware that love is an art, just as living is an art; if we want to learn how to love we must proceed in the same way we have to proceed if we want to learn any other art, say music, painting, carpentry, or the art of medicine or engineering. What are the necessary steps in learning any art? The process of learning an art can be divided conveniently into two parts: one, the mastery of the theory; the other, the mastery of the practice. If I want to learn the art of medicine, I must first know the facts about the human body, and about various diseases. When I have all this theoretical knowledge, I am by no means competent in the art of medicine. I shall become a master in this art only after a great deal of practice, until eventually the results of my theoretical knowledge and the results of my practice are blended into one — my intuition, the essence of the mastery of any art. But, aside from learning the theory and practice, there is a third factor necessary to becoming a master in any art — the mastery of the art must be a matter of ultimate concern; there must be nothing else in the world more important than the art. This holds true for music, for medicine, for carpentry — and for love. And, maybe, here lies the answer to the question of why people in our culture try so rarely to learn this art, in spite of their obvious failures: in spite of the deep-seated craving for love, almost everything else is considered to be more important than love: success, prestige, money, power — almost all our energy is used for the learning of how to achieve these aims, and almost none to learn the art of loving“.

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase 19 February 2017

Wow! What a week for mobile photography and art imagery! You’ve all kept me very busy this morning/afternoon, selecting your images and placing them, carefully into this showcase. So much so, that my mind has almost gone blank with what to say. Usually, on a Sunday, after I have worked on our showcase, I assimilate some words and thoughts, things I have been thinking over during the week, perhaps. Of course, this week took in Valentines Day, which to many of us means love. So, of course, that got me thinking, of the Valentines week that I spent with my love and also, I thought of, perhaps in view of many of the images and messages I received, from others, that perhaps some have not had a love to share it with this year. That’s happened to me of course, we have all felt that at various times in our lives, perhaps when a person we shared a love history with has not come true or just when we have enjoyed our own company. Some say, you don’t find love, love finds you. I have to confess that many of my loves, have found me, in fact most of the time I wasn’t even aware that love was before me, but others noticed and pointed it out. What I do know is that however we do find love, or it finds us, enduring love, is something we have to make, to work on. Humans are imperfect and sustaining love, sometimes in difficult circumstances is challenging, but very worthwhile.

Well, it seems I did find something to say afterall. Thank you everyone for sharing your truly stunning images with us this week. This is definitely a very beautiful showcase.
