A work of remarkable cinematic scope, this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group Showcase portrays an unusual mix of qualities, combining powerful social realism with poetic lyrical resonances that derive from precise imagery and fascination with cultural observations. Revealing the challenges of life around the world right here, right now, at a time when women’s lives in particular are becoming substantially illimitable. ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’ wrote Joan Didion, one of America’s greatest essayists and that’s true, of course but in my mind, we create imagery in order to breathe. Enjoy!

Mobile Photography – TrueView Interview – ‘The Pregnant Moment’ with Liliana Schwitter from Switzerland

Share

Our TrueView Interview section is an area where we ask one singular question, to mobile photographers and artists and it is captured to video. This time, I have asked mobile artists to consider their work within a story telling/narrative framework. My thoughts behind this, include an 18th century thesis, ‘Laocoon: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry‘, Gotthold Lessing argued that although painting could not communicate narrative in the sense of telling a story, it could imply drama by aspiring to capture the “pregnant moment”. In photography, this idea thrives as the “decisive moment” first introduced by Henri Cartier-Bresson and his followers. Therefore, my question to a mobile artist we hugely admire, Liliana Schwitter from Switzerland [with the above in mind], is “how you build your image to express or allude to some sort of story. Do you plot, or not? How do you define it?

Many artists are working on their videos right now and each video is as unique and individual as each artist. We are fully conscious and respectful that you are all capturing a part of yourself and sharing it with us and we love it. Thank you.

Thank you for being a reader and viewer of our wonderful site. If you would like to view our previous TrueView Interviews, please go here.

Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties“, writes Erich Fromm, one of the most prescient thinkers of the 20th century. Love and creativity play a huge part of my life and it is physical. Love of art, the art of loving, irrational, intellectual, obsessive, insightful. Professor Semir Zeki, a neurobiologist at the University College London, proved in a series of pioneering brain-mapping experiments that viewing art triggers a surge of dopamine, the feel-good chemicial, into the orbito-frontal cortex of the brain, resulting in feelings of intense pleasure, the same part of the brain that is excited, when we fall for someone, romantically. For all of us associated with mobile photography and art, we already know this, mobile art is our fix just like illicit drug taking, we feel immediate stimulation and like a drug, our reward centres crave for more. I also believe it is not just the viewers but also the creators of mobile art, that reach for that high too. Love, like creatvity, requires courage, to let ourselves go, as Fromm described above. It’s fierce trust, it demands you put forth your work, without knowing an outcome because fierce trust knows that the outcome does not matter, it cannot matter. Keep sharing your work, each one of you reading this was born to create. Ask yourself, how fierce is your trust in that love? Keep creating, keep viewing, it’s our labour of love.

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

In the UK we have a literary award of which, it is of no honour to win. It is the Bad Sex Award and each year since 1993 an author is honoured who has, in the opinion of the judges, produced an outstandingly bad scene of sexual description, in an otherwise good novel. The results of which, I always find interesting to read, notwithstanding the reviews too. Is it wrong to find it laudable?  This year one author and writer for The Guardian, Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett claims the thought of being awarded the bad sex award has inspired her to work harder, she writes, Many women are acutely aware of what bad sex feels like because, I’m depressed to say, lots of us have experienced it first hand, and reading scenes where a female character is in raptures the minute the tip of a penis makes contact will always lead to raised eyebrows.”. The irony of this award is that it is actually getting harder to award it, many have said that the awards handed over this year for bad sex are actually not ‘too bad’. The best thing about this is that it is actually possible that male authors are paying more attention to the female experience and what a great thing that is, for all of us. This week Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group showcase is the opposite of a Bad Sex Award, there’s no self-doubt evident here, the result of this multimedia display is a groundbreaking thrust in the face of engaging the real world in new and surprising ways. Enjoy!
