Photography – TED Talk – ‘The Silent Drama of Photography’ – Sebastião Salgado

Share

It’s time for another inspirational photographic TED talk. We feature ones that we feel our readers will particularly enjoy. This week this talk is entitled “The Silent Drama of Photography” and it’s by Sebastião Salgado.

“Economics PhD Sebastião Salgado only took up photography in his 30s, but the discipline became an obsession. His years-long projects beautifully capture the human side of a global story that all too often involves death, destruction or decay. Here, he tells a deeply personal story of the craft that nearly killed him, and shows breathtaking images from his latest work, Genesis, which documents the world’s forgotten people and places”.  Source TED.

Inspiring Photographic TED Talk – ‘How Photography Connects Us’

Share

Followers of TheAppWhisperer.com will be aware that perhaps the biggest ethos of our wonderful website is the connection that we share. Of course, the basis of that connection is photography and art but it goes much deeper than that. I have lived my life within the depths of photography, since I turned professional thirty years ago. The photography world looked very different then but the emotional core of our wonderful art form has always been been the same. TheAppWhisperer is a community, one where we share what we love, for a multitude of reasons, whether that is professional or personal.

We built this section ‘Inspiring Photographic TED Talks’ within the website some time ago. I find TED talks and their speakers incredibly inspiring. I am also privileged to know many of them and I know personally just how passionate they are about photography.

Please enjoy this one, by David Griffin, formerly the Photo Director for National Geographic, listen/read his language – he uses words such as ‘love’ frequently, feel his enthusiasm. This is a man passionate about photography, as we all are. This is about connection, this is about love.

I have created a special section within TheAppWhisperer to publish inspiring photographic related TED talks to. To read the previous articles, please go here.

Very early this morning, whilst awaking in my never lonely bed, it was quiet, calm and peaceful. I looked at my partner as he slept and thought of love, what it means, what makes us build a life with someone, how we choose, what do we look for and as life progresses the trials and tribulations, what do we cling to, why do we cling to it? So many unanswered questions.  I picked up my phone and found this fabulous TED talk that goes so well within our new section here. Stacy Baker, Photo Editor of the New York Times has been obsessed with how couples meet. When she asked photographer Alec Soth to help her explore this topic, they found themselves at the world’s largest speed-dating event, held in Las Vegas on Valentine’s Day, and at the largest retirement community in Nevada — with Soth taking portraits of pairs in each locale. Between these two extremes, they unwound a beautiful through-line of how a couple goes from meeting to creating a life together.

I have created a special section within TheAppWhisperer to publish inspirational photographic related TED talks to. The first that I published last week was with Uldus Bakhtiozina, a fabulous photographer and one that I interviewed recently for Vogue.  If you missed that, you can view it here.

Today, I am publishing another inspiring TED talk to rouse us all. This one stars Lisa Kristine. For the past two years, photographer Lisa Kristine has traveled the world, documenting the unbearably harsh realities of modern-day slavery. She shares hauntingly beautiful images — miners in the Congo, brick layers in Nepal — illuminating the plight of the 27 million souls enslaved worldwide.
