Joanne Carter – TheAppWhisperer Speaks at The Photography Show 2015 – Seminar 1 – First Part

Many of you will be aware that I was invited to speak on stage at The Photography Show this year about mobile photography. This is the largest annual photography show in Europe and it was a privilege to be asked to talk. I was not given a brief, other than being told I had been booked for four 30 minute seminars over two days. I didn’t need or want a brief, I knew what I wanted to talk about, I knew what a wanted to share with the audience.  I wanted to ensure that every single person that attended my talks, left inspired, invigorated with their minds buzzing at the possibilities of mobile photography and what can be achieved. I’m delighted to say, this happened each and every time, literally time after time.

My talks could have quite easily have extended to 60 minutes, I had plenty of content and the audience wanted more. It was not possible to extend due to the packed schedule of events.

After each seminar many of the audience approached me, eager to learn more about the artists I had been portraying.  Asking advice regarding selling or buying mobile images and art. They shared some of their work with me, left me their details, told me their minds were alive, they felt invigorated. I knew it was a job well done. The audience consisted of a wide spectrum of wonderful minds, from the Head of Photography at Cambridge University (who was incidentally hugely inspired, he told me he had learnt so much, and came back for a second talk too), to professional artists and photographers, to Journalists, TV presenters and to students from Universities from around country.

I’d spent several weeks working around the clock preparing for the show. I had contacted some of our Columnists to ask for contributions as well and each and everyone that I asked produced outstanding work, which I will show.

In this post I am going to detail the first part of Seminar 1 and the second part to follow in the next article. I will follow throughout the week with Seminars 2, 3 and 4.

I asked Vivi Hanson Sacerdote to accompany me as an Assistant and she was perfect, very professional, I am so thankful to her, many of you will have seen the images and short videos that she posted on FB of the event, I can’t thank her enough.

The Photography Show & TheAppWhisperer – Photography Contest – ‘The Best of You’

As you know I will be presenting at The Photography Show in ten days time about mobile photography/art and the photographers and artists behind it all – I’m so enthralled by your talent, I can’t wait to show what you can do.  One way of doing this is to create a ‘contest’ – this is not really a competition contest, it’s a place for you to show your very best work.

I would like you all to submit ‘The Best of You’ – your best image to our dedicated Flickr Group for the show (see here).  Please only submit one image and I would like it to be a new work of art, not one that has been submitted elsewhere previously. I will curate this set and present a Flickr Group Showcase on stage at The Photography Show, demonstrating the high level and strength of your creations.

All entries must be submitted by 18th March, 2015 and no entries will be considered after that date.

Tickets still available to see Lynsey Addario at The Photography Show

As you know I’m presenting at The Photography Show this year in four seminars, if you’ve missed those details, please go here.  There’s also some other exciting news too, as the finishing touches are being put together, there’s been some exciting developments with one of the Super Stage speakers – Lynsey Addario.

It was announced last week that a film will be made from Lynsey’s book, ‘It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War’ and will be directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Jennifer Lawrence as Lynsey.

The Photography Show will be hosting Lynsey on the Super Stage on Monday 23rd at 16:00 to discuss her book and some of the images featured within it. This is an amazing opportunity to see the Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist live in the UK talking first hand about her experiences

Lynsey will share the realities of working in a war zone and explain what it is that keeps her going back. More information on Lynsey Addario

In addition to Lynsey the other Super Stage speakers this year are:

  • Martin Parr
  • Tom Stoddart
  • Mary Ellen Mark
  • Tim Flach
  • Michael Kenna
  • Susan Meiselas
  • Simon Norfolk
  • Don McCullin

The Photography Show – ‘Women in Photography’

There’s another good reason to attend The Photography Show, I say ‘another’ because I am of course referring to the seminars that I will be presenting about mobile photography and art – to learn more about those and to get a discounted ticket, go here.

The Photography Show – held at the NEC in Birmingham from 21-24 March – is one of the biggest photographic events in the year, bringing together the very best of the photographic industry.

Part of The Photography Show’s appeal is that it provides a platform to address and champion all aspects of the photographic world. In-keeping with this ethos the show has introduced a panel discussion that focuses on Women in Photography, a subject that is topical for the industry and still very much discussed and debated.

A panel of women, all leaders in their chosen field, will discuss the position of women in photography as seen from their own experience and perspectives.

Facilitator, Bridget Coaker, Founder of Troika Editions and Picture Editor for The Guardian and The Observer explains “The resurgence of feminism and issues of gender equality make the debate around the role of women in photography relevant not only to the photographic industry but  to women’s position in society more generally. Women work either side of the camera, as maker or subject and as importantly women are often the leaders, taste-makers and educators within the photography world, yet it is the men who command the high prices in galleries and are chosen for high profile fashion and advertising commissions.”

The three key themes open to discussion will be:

  •  Does photography have a gender bias?
  •  Raising the profile of women photography – should we rely on more traditional strategies of encouragement to help break through?
  •  Networking and self promotion, confidence and self belief. Are they enough?

Coaker goes on to say “This will be a great opportunity to hear how women can succeed and what obstacles still remain to be overcome. Expect a lively discussion from both the panel and questions from the floor.”

The panel discussion takes place 14:00-15:30 on Monday 23rd March in the Toute Suite.

The Photography Show is supported by the Royal Photographic Society, the Master Photographers Association, the Association of Photographers, the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain, The Societies, The Disabled Photographers’ Society and FORMAT Festival.
