Streets Ahead is a column on The App Whisperer which is dedicated to sharing and highlighting the work created by talented women in the mobile (smartphone) photography community, as well as exploring the unique and fresh perspective that they bring to this genre.
This column provides a platform for discussion on the techniques, aesthetics, and goals that we, as women, bring to this art form and we hope by creating this Streets Ahead Facebook Group that we will enable more women to be heard and contribute.
Please note, this Facebook group is not for posting any personal work, but more for posting links to interesting articles and for discussions about topics related to street photography.
Please post your personal work to our dedicated Streets Ahead group on Flickr. This is what we use to make our selections for the showcases.
Criteria for submissions
Street photography by definition is photography that captures people and places within the public domain. It doesn’t necessarily need to include people, but there should be a suggestion or visual acknowledgement of the human presence. It can also be defined as un-posed, un-staged photography. It often captures, explores or questions contemporary society and the relationships between individuals and their surroundings. Framing and timing are key aspects, with the aim of creating images that capture a decisive or poignant moment.
We believe that it is important to focus on the key aspects of the craft of street photography – composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching that decisive moment – rather than relying on too much apping. We therefore feel that apping should be kept to a minimum – cropping, tweaking exposure, colour, adding a little grain or texture is ok but we would like you to steer away from overly app’ed images that are more art-orientated or painterly.
1. You must be female to submit photos to the group pool
2. All submissions must be shot and processed with a mobile device
3. We will not accept images that the admins deem to be ‘over apped’
4. The admins reserve the right to delete any images that they feel are not relevant to the subject matter or the group’s criteria. Please read the group description for further information
Please note: Even though we appreciate and admire all the photography that is being done by both genders in this community, we will only be highlighting and exploring women’s contributions in our column and showcases. Sorry about that, guys 🙂
Also please note: In our “Files” section, you can explore different articles, web sites and videos that our Members have shared. There is lots of interesting information on this page, so feel free to browse around. And check back too as we will update our file documents regularly.
