Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 15 April 2018

Urgently contemporary, this weeks mobile photography and art flickr group showcase is a huge thrill and I know all about thrills. This week I chatted with a friend, one I’ve not seen for such a long time. The most charming man, the most fragrant and also the most generous. Slipping back into rambling conversations about, art, photography and sex, we absorbed and absolved one another as we nudged the English language to its limits. Art as in life, is about desire and the mobile photographers and artists that we have featured in this weeks showcase, have satiated mine. There’s real humanity in this showcase, with insights into love and longing with the under current narrative, stimulating and deeply rewarding. Enjoy!

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

Sometimes when curating and putting together our mobile photography and art showcase, as I work long hours, tiredness creeps in and it’s at those times when semi consciousness takes over and the real creativity happens. I think this is the case for many artists, creativity can not be turned on and off with the flick of switch, sometimes it takes a while for it to start building and smouldering and as the heat builds and builds it becomes the all encompassing climax of our vigorous lives. There is much talent in this showcase, matched with fierce, compassionate and revelatory art. Enjoy this piercingly tender film, it’s one that will make you laugh, cry and reflect on what life is all about and for me, that’s kindness, rooted in true respect for human dignity and equality – a society without kindness would be a much sadder place. Love to you all, always…

I’ve been really excited this week because I have created a new interview platform within TheAppWhisperer that allows artists to answer the textual questions we ask, visually and the results have been spectacular. I have wanted to do this for sometime. As I explained elsewhere on the internet, my thought processes behind this format of interview are based on not only my life experiences but also on some of my professional qualifications. I have been surrounded my entire life by people who find communicating in a neurotypical way, difficult. I believe and have always believed that the onus is on the person trying to interpret what is being communicated, to understand. Just as a profoundly deaf person uses sign language to communicate with another, to understand, we also need to acquire it, so we can transcribe their thoughts and communicate ours to them. There is an integral part of our society who share difficulties with communication and because of this, many struggle with relationships and this hinders not only their own but also our life experiences. Many of you will be aware of Temple Grandin, in Thinking in Pictures, she explains “words are like a second language for me”. Many years ago, I shared an audience with her, a truly remarkable presence. I am not suggesting here, for one moment that visual artists are on the autistic spectrum, it is far more complex than that but I am aware that their images, portray their best chance of being understood. Therefore, if we are to truly embrace all of society, we need to allow them to communicate to us, in their natural default way and we need to think laterally and to re-skill. Language can be the barrier, it is up to us to lower the fence if we are to truly unriddle their psyches. When we enter an art gallery, rarely are we met with an oral interpretation of the images displayed on the walls. There’s almost a silence, with many people gathered around a painting as each of their brains scramble to decipher what they are viewing. It’s an observation that is fascinating to view and it is one that visual artists also find compelling, you’ll see many examples of this in our weekly showcase of mobile photography and art. The world needs all of us, we are all interested in art, the great mobile artists that we see here, in this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, are not so much theologians as brilliant analysts of the human heart.

We have a choice, to give ourselves permission to go where ever our thoughts take us and when we do that, we can feel the incredibly rush of creativity and excitement this exists within all of us. My body, my choice, turn your fears into excitement, your anxieties into enthusiasm and your passion into energy. The artists in this weeks Showcase have done just that, this is a sumptuous, glorious portrayal of mobile photography and art, today. A work of remarkable cinematic scope, this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group Showcase portrays an unusual mix of qualities, combining powerful social realism with poetic lyrical resonances that derive from precise imagery and fascination with cultural observations. Revealing the challenges of life around the world right here, right now, at a time when women’s lives in particular are becoming substantially illimitable. ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’ wrote Joan Didion, one of America’s greatest essayists and that’s true, of course but in my mind, we create imagery in order to breathe. Enjoy!

Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties“, writes Erich Fromm, one of the most prescient thinkers of the 20th century. Love and creativity play a huge part of my life and it is physical. Love of art, the art of loving, irrational, intellectual, obsessive, insightful. Professor Semir Zeki, a neurobiologist at the University College London, proved in a series of pioneering brain-mapping experiments that viewing art triggers a surge of dopamine, the feel-good chemicial, into the orbito-frontal cortex of the brain, resulting in feelings of intense pleasure, the same part of the brain that is excited, when we fall for someone, romantically. For all of us associated with mobile photography and art, we already know this, mobile art is our fix just like illicit drug taking, we feel immediate stimulation and like a drug, our reward centres crave for more. I also believe it is not just the viewers but also the creators of mobile art, that reach for that high too. Love, like creatvity, requires courage, to let ourselves go, as Fromm described above. It’s fierce trust, it demands you put forth your work, without knowing an outcome because fierce trust knows that the outcome does not matter, it cannot matter. Keep sharing your work, each one of you reading this was born to create. Ask yourself, how fierce is your trust in that love? Keep creating, keep viewing, it’s our labour of love.
