Mobile Photography – Brand New App -SWRLY Giveaway worth $2.99 each

Share

There’s a brand new universal (for iPhone and iPad) app on the streets called SWRLY by accomplished BrainFeverMedia app developers. SWRLY is a modern take on the orginal swirly lens, the Petzval, created in 1840 by Josef Petzval – one of the foremost optical physicists of his day. This lens design was one of the first portrait lenses and is characterised by a unique swirly bokeh effect. Many of the earliest photos (daguerreotypes, tintypes, etc) were captured with Petzval lenses.  The characteristic look developed with this app is of course over 170 years old and optical lens design, in general has developed considerably since then but the reason this app is of interest now, is directly due to the distinctive ‘look’ it produces.

Mobile Photography / Art Tutorial – Circular Tiny Planet: Funny Shapes?

Share

We are delighted to publish Jerry Jobe’s latest mobile photography/art video tutorial for our  viewing pleasure. This time Jobe takes a look at the app Circular. Take it away Jerry…

Circular Tiny Planet retails for $1.99 and you can download it here

“The story behind the title of this week’s column is that it comes from a line in the movie Raising Arizona and a scene where two small-time hood brothers discuss some provisions they picked up for a kidnapped baby:

Evelle: I got me some baby grub, baby wipes, diapers, them disposable kind. I also got a package of balloons.

Gale: They blow up into funny shapes and all?

Evelle: No, just circular.

Circular by BrainFeverMedia is a tiny-planets style app that turns the horizon in your image into the surface of a very small planet. It wraps your image around into a circle – no funny shapes. There are a number of these apps available, including Tiny Planets and RollWorld (covered in September 2014). As with most specialised apps, there are reasons to like each of them. I say like rather than prefer, because Circular and RollWorld each has features that the other lacks, and I can make use of both apps”.

Mobile Photography / Art Tutorial – Alien Sky: Exploring New Worlds with Jerry Jobe

Share

We are delighted to publish Jerry Jobe’s latest mobile photography/art tutorial for our reading and viewing pleasure. This time Jobe takes a look at the app Alien Sky by BrainFeverMedia. Read Jobe’s thoughts about this app as he puts it through its paces (foreword by Joanne Carter). Take it away Jerry…

Alien Sky retails for $2.99/£2.29 and you can download it here.

"Many artistic/photographic apps try to cover all the bases. These “suites” offer the user many different ways to manipulate their images. Others choose to stick with a certain function. This can be tricky, because the developers need to be fairly certain that they protect their little niche by being the best out there in their own little corner.

BrainFever Media decides to chart the second course, popping out apps like Reflect, for reflected water effects, and LensLight and LensFlare for bursts of light. Another area where they have carved out their own niche is in the addition of stars and planets to a sky. Unlike Reflect, LensLight and LensFlare, Alien Sky does not seem to have any competition in its own niche. We know that a lack of competition usually means a shoddy product, but I’m glad to say that Alien Sky is as robust and up-to-date as all of BrainFever’s other apps.

So what does Alien Sky do? It takes an ordinary landscape right out of this world – literally".
