Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 9 July 2017

The past only comes back‘, wrote Virginia Woolf in her unfinished memoir, “when the present runs so smoothly that it is like the sliding surface of a deep river. Then one sees through the surface to the depths“. I confess, I am a huge fan of Virginia Woolf, the English writer who is considered to be one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century and essentially (to me) a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. I ‘discovered’ Woolf’s work as a young girl, long before my eldest son attended boarding school, in Lewes, where she died, drowning herself in the River Ouse, not far from her home. Woolf above all was a pioneer for women, she is a reminder to us all that we must follow our creative urges, we must make up for the time lost (essentially in the West), where we are now freed. One of the many things I love about mobile photography and art, is that women are owning it. I am not against male work at all but I love, the freedom it gives to women, and men are adoring us, even more for it. The creative coalescing between all of our work makes for a richer, deeper picture. We speak to each other, through our imagery, We are all part of this powerful show and how it plays on, rejoice!

Creative arts and rejection go hand in hand, the latter is almost part of the process. It’s not just within the creative arts that we hanker to be accepted, to suceed, to realise our dreams. We all need each other to thrive, it’s the nature of humanity, human beings need one another. A young child experiencing unconditional love will live, will thrive, will prosper, will flourish, grow and bloom. Love is essential to early development but other than early childhood, rejection is hardly physically life-threatning. But it hurts, rejection in any form hurts, because our feelings are deeply intimate.

When we are judged unfairly through untruths, the more upset we become and there are a lot of untruths out there…everyday we make more tears, none of us need more pain… So, for crying out loud, how do we make rejection work for us? How do we stop feeling bad? You must remember that one, or thousands of rejections, personal and/or professional, does not mean that you failed, it means you tried. Keep doing that, try again.

As I have mentioned before, art and health are in-explicity linked – there are obvious health benefits and we have to keep those beneifts in the forefront of our mindsets. You will never forget your first rejection, sometimes that rejection will stay with you, deeply. Rejection can teach you a lot about yourself and those around you. Keep in mind, the dignity of difference, keep in mind, we all feel pain, we all feel fear and most of all, we all feel love. We all have the capacity to make love, let’s focus on that.

This weeks Flickr mobile photograhy and art showcase is bursting with artists’ creations, artists that continue to create, continue to face their fears of rejection; knowing that not only will their work be judged but also the person behind the work.

If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art flickr group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here. If you would like to view our previous Flickr Group Showcases (please go here).

There is no silence more resounding than that of a cognitive communication malfunction. To be awake, to understand, to feel excruciating pain, to be aware of an existence but unable to reply. We all live complex and miracles of life, diverting us, pleasing us, frightening, transforming and defining us. We share so much, least of all our love for mobile photography and art. This weeks showcase explores profound emotional and visceral matters. It is an elegant and moving film, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

The Nobel laureate Herta Muller once said, “language is so different from life. How am I supposed to fit the one into the other? How can I bring them together?”. Art has amazing power to foster collaboration between different societies and can be a powerful way to bring communities together. Art has the capacity to heal…One of the many things your art brings to us all is it helps us to recognise what we did not know before. Thank you.
