Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism‘ what perfect timing, if you pardon the pun. Kristen R Ghodsee has published a thoroughly researched exploration proclaiming that capitalism is bad for women.  She argues, adopting some ideas from socialism  ‘women will have better lives’ and of course, this includes sex. Ghodsee, an acclaimed ethnographer and professor of Russian and East European Studies, spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism. In this book, she analysed many facets of a woman’s life – work, parenting, sex and relationships, community and authority. One chapter, entitled “Women: Like Men, But Cheaper,” she discusses women in the workplace, deliberating all things from wage gaps to harassment and discrimination. In “What To Expect When You’re Expecting Exploitation,” she addresses motherhood and how “having it all” is impossible under capitalism. With regards ‘better’ sex, naturally it is hard to substantiate, many cultural factors come into play but what’s interesting is her theory that less inequity decommodifies sex, undermining the odious theory of ‘sexual economics’ as she describes, whereby, women raise the ‘price’ of sex by denying it. She explains “in societies with high levels of gender equality, with strong protections for reproductive freedom, and with large social safety nets, women almost never have to worry about the price their sex will fetch on an open market.” As we are increasingly told this is ‘the year of women’ which I find patronising and as we do rise up and speak out against abusive relationships and gain increased support to leave, perhaps this is enabling sexual freedom? In these trying times, she ends the book with “we can share our attentions without quantifying their value, giving and receiving rather than selling and buying.” It struck me, as I read this book, how much the latter sentence I shared co-relates with our mobile photography and art community. How much we give to each other, how much we share, how much we embrace one another and how much we realign our own art society ensuring that each one of us feels equal to the other. This much we do know and it’s clear to see in this weeks Flickr Group Mobile Photography and Art Showcase, enjoy!

This week has been an interesting one, half way through it I spoke with highly talented mobile artist, Jane Schulz on the telephone. Now hearing is not my forte, as many of you know, it comes with the territory of being severely to moderately deaf but I do try. I like to think of myself more as a listener. Anyway, between the bumps, silences and crashes of our telephone call, we discussed the ‘state’ of mobile photography and art today, not so much the talent, which rises each week but more the state of the community. To me, the community is the most important area, it’s one where we conjoin, work as one, support and nurture, laugh, share and take pleasure, together. Lately, it’s felt a little fragmented and there are an assortment of reasons for this. However, I didn’t really want to focus on those, I wanted us to focus on the positives and to bring it back and grow it even more. So, I steered and suggested to Schultz, we create a fabulous new post, honouring ThanksGiving, by thanking each and everyone of us, similar to our New Years Eve Resolutions post but with the emphasis on thanks. Schultz agreed and suggested we expand it across all of the spheres of the mobile photography community. Many of you would have received invitations from me to participate in TheAppWhisperer version of this – if you have not, then please take a look at our New Years Eve resolution page, and basing it on ThanksGiving, please think about what positive affects the Mobile Photography and Art Community has had on your life, send me a few sentences and also one image representing your thoughts. If you’ve received invitations from anywhere else within the community, please try to honour those too. Essentially, we are one and together we are a formidable positive force. #Together #LoveWins #RiseUP

Our Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group is central to our community and this weeks showcase is literally a cathartic crescendo of togetherness, thank you all.

“Individuals often withhold help because they are uncertain about whether beneficiaries will appreciate their assistance. Expressions of gratitude can signify that a beneficiary values, needs, and accepts one’s assistance. Previous research has shown that grateful feelings enable people to savour positive experiences, cope with stress, and strengthen social relationships. A disposition toward gratitude is also associated with higher levels of subjective well-being, demonstrating that counting one’s blessings can increase positive emotions and health”, Francis Flynn, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at Stanford. Appreciation is one of life’s great motivators, when we take the time to let people know that we value them, it naturally inspires them to continue doing even more. Gratitude is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving and I hope you all realise that each image you create, and each artist that we feature, enables this process to multiply. Emotions can cloud our judgements and influence our decisions when triggered by a situation at hand, it is of course also possible for emotions triggered by one event to spill over and affect another, unrelated situation. Here at TheAppWhisperer HQ, we are well versed in this, ‘linger longer’ as our dear friend and artist Carolyn Hall Young advocated throughout her life. We each have a choice in our decisions, however complex, objectively and thoroughly. This weeks Mobile Photography and Art showcase is bursting with high end creativity. “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose”, Steve Jobs. For many of us who have stared death in the face too many times, it is important to remember disinhibition can be a good thing, sometimes feeling anonymous frees some people to be dishonest, for others, it frees them to perform at their very best.
