Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 16 September 2018

I love literature almost as much as I love visual art and this week I’ve been indulging in ‘The Letters of Sylvia Plath: Volume II, 1956-1963, edited by Peter K Steinberg and Karen Kukil. The relationship between Ted Huges and Sylvia Plath as we know, was astonishing in its intensity and Plath’s letters, deeply private. The tragedy of their lives is no more acute when you consider what could have been, two immensely gifted poets, who found each other and then literally tore each other apart. Hughes who cheated not only physically but emotionally published poems which Plath discovered, each one a passionate love poem to his lover, ‘describing their orgasms, her ivory body, her smell, her beauty’ and then expressing in a ‘world of beauties he married a hag’. To Plath ‘the knowledge that I am ugly and hateful kills me’. Physically, it’s now known that not only did Plath suffer a miscarriage in February 1961 but her letters reveal the reason, ‘Ted beat me up physically a couple of days before my miscarriage’. How is it that two people, so, on the surface perfectly suited, could penetrate their hatred so intensely within one another? No one is normal but has humanity learned nothing? And thus, I flung myself back into the beautiful world of mobile photography and art, such an evolving and vivid transition. This week I have carefully compiled an extraordinary variety of images as we continue our own revolution in art. When you play this film, you’ll discover a show with a very pure and simple focus: the spectacle being, our radical new way of making art. Enjoy!

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

New Projects – Our New Form of Artistic Installation aka ‘The Quilt’ Is Ready!

Share

We’re delighted to inform our readers that the quilt that so many of you contributed to, has now been completed. For those of you not aware of this project, it involved mobile artists contributing one image and each one was then carefully included within a large quilt to be displayed at the next gallery show or even Mobile Arts Festival. There has been a few obstacles along the way and we have overcome each one. This quilt was sewed together and finalised by none other than mobile artist, Lorenka Campos’ mother in law. We all owe her much gratitude. The quilt is now with Lorenka Campos, so if you would like to display it at your next event, please contact her for details.

I have also been reminded and I shouldn’t have needed to be however, “Linda Toki did the whole layout of the quilt and had it printed. She also spent days working on the catalog so I really think she deserves a shout out as the quilt would never have happened without her”. We all need to give huge thanks to Linda M. Toki – join me!!

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 15 July 2018

‘How to fail’ is a podcast series by journalist and novelist Elizabeth Day, whereupon she interviews celebrities and asks them to list three examples, demonstrating their  failures in life. Perhaps, not surprisingly, men somewhat balked at the idea that they’d failed at anything and when pressed, admitted to losing tennis matches, or the inability to get souffles to rise, whereas women confessed they had trouble limiting the list to just three failures. Naturally, my thoughts drifted to my own failures, where to start… trying too hard to find love as a teenager complete with ‘mistakes’…, not selling my first cottage before the property crash in 1990 when I was 21, progressing too soon with pregnancy following major liver surgery, I could go on, of course. Day explains “the only way to survive [life crises] is to surrender to the process”. Like Day, it dawned on me that I had my work and I am lucky because my work here at TheAppWhisperer, comfortably means I am never fully alone, I always have the most gracious company, by my side. And you’ll see them in his weeks’ Mobile Photography & Art showcase, a glowing example of true, dear artists. And, actually, when looking at my failures, I could also see my successes, which curiously ran alongside. Had I not been so starved of love as a young girl, I may not have met the man that I married, who worships, not only ever area of my physical body, but also my mind, he is my nourishment, he is my strength. Had I indeed sold my cottage in 1990, then I would not have had a place to rehabilitate, following major life saving liver surgery in 1993. Had I not become pregnant in late 1995, my dear son, Jake would not be here, with us today. The riches of life can sometimes only be learned from our failures. As Day who listed divorce as one her failures explained, as she folded her wedding dress into a box, wrapping it carefully in layers of tissue paper for the nice woman in Shropshire who had bought it on eBay realised, this wasn’t failure at all, it was a part of life, she had learned from it and now she was letting it go, the failure had departed, the creator had returned.

Enjoy this triumph of a showcase, each singular image has the capacity to provoke and to surprise, each one, full of life.

To many artists in this weeks Mobile Photography & Art Showcase, and beyond, mobile art is a coping mechanism. Creating art allows us to live alternative lives, whether for ourselves or for our subjects. This weeks showcase should be recognised as own emblem, forever moving forward whilst simultaneously sensing time’s passage, evidence that is cognizant in our art. Dorothea Lange said it best with “A camera is a tool, for learning how to see without a camera“. This week we share a brilliantly delineated context of imagination whilst recognising among the first avant garde artists of the mobile camera. Enjoy!

We are so excited with our latest Instagram TAKEOVER this time with @sunflowerof21 – Elaine Taylor, she is a respected and very talented mobile photographer. Taylor has been granted full access to our Instagram account and she is doing a very impressive job. We are very proud of her!

On Day 1 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @dinalf – Dina Alfasi and she writes Hello. It’s @sunflowerof21. I’m over the moon to be taking over this account for the next couple of weeks. It’s an honour and a treat to share my favourite images from #theappwhisperer.  I’m kicking off my takeover off with this amazing image from one of my favourite igers: @dinalf. Her work is absolutely stunning – mobile photography at its best! Go to Dina’s feed and you’ll see exactly what I mean”.

On Day 2 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of our one and only Portrait of an Artist Editor, Ile Mont @ilemusi and she writes @sunflowerof21 here with my second selection from #theappwhisperer. I’m a huge fan of @ilemusi’s work. Her creative use of apps creates surreal and dynamic images and draws your eyes to the figures within them. Head over to her feed to see more fabulous images like this one”.

On Day 3 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @lorenka – Lorenka Campos and she writes “Hello! It’s @sunflowerof21 here, sharing my third featured image from #theappwhisperer.Lorenka’s work always stops me in my tracks. It’s creative, emotional and expressive. The majority of her images include a human face, but I have a particular soft spot for her florals. I love this pretty delicate thing, dancing within the frame. Beautiful”

On Day 4 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @christinemignon – Christine Mignon and she writes @sunflowerof21 here with feature number four from the #theappwhisperer tag.I adore Christine’s work – her creative use of Hipstamatic (my first and favourite app) is truly inspiring. This image is one of my favourites from this year – I love the leading lines, the bold colours and those tiny silhouetted figures. It’s just fantastic!”

Please take a look at our @TheAppWhisperer Instagram account to follow all the goings on and please also tag your images with #TheAppWhisperer, so that they can be found and potentially featured.

“I love the people I photograph. I mean, they’re my friends. I’ve never met most of them or I don’t know them at all, yet through my images I live with them.” Bruce Gilden

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for submitting your images to StreetWise Flickr group for our ‘Winter Showcase.’

We were touched by the soulfulness and warmth of your photos – beautiful winter scenes (whether in tropical or snowy settings) of people (and animals) looking out windows, windows as frames, windows reflecting cityscapes, people in public transportation, carrying umbrellas, lone figures in urban landscapes and photos of people connecting hand in hand, or embracing one another. Even in the often darker, bleaker times of the winter months, when taking street photos can present a challenge, so many of your images captured what it means to be human – our fragility and our connection to one another.

We are inspired by this international group and it is our honor for Ilana and I to curate so many wonderful artists from around the world, and to ultimately, share the showcases with you.

Ilana and I find it very difficult to choose such few images for the showcase from all those that were submitted and we want you to know that we appreciate each and every post!

As a reminder, we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group’s intention and guidelines focusing on key aspects of street photography composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment rather than relying on too much aping or images that are more art oriented or painterly.

If you are a street photographer, please consider joining our growing community. To those new to our community, welcome – it’s great to have you join us!

Please continue to post your images to StreetWise Flickr group for showcase submissions:

https://www.flickr.com/groups/2750883@N25/pool/

Please note that StreetWise Facebook page is NOT for posting photographs but for sharing information/discussions, thank you!

A special thank you to Joanne.

We hope you feel inspired by this showcase and our wonderful group. Until next time, happy shooting everyone!

Many congratulations to the following artists for being featured in our showcase including:

Basak Aytek, Daniel Vondav, Donna Donato, Dina Alfasi, Paula Betlem, Carlein, Kathy Clay, Vanessa Vox, Mark Fearnley, Allyson, Susan Rennie, Armineh Hovanesian, Julia Nathanson, Isabelle Wolter, Marc Zetterblom, Ger van den Elzen,  Michel Dev1, Karen Axelrad, Michael Beresin, Laurence Bouchard, Paul Yan, Ocean Morisset, Christine Mignon, Myrna, Giulia Baita, Nick Kenrick, Luison, JH McB, Dixon Hamby, Valeria Cammareri, and Rene Valencia
