“Mercy is radical kindness. Mercy means offering or being offered aid in desperate straits. Mercy is not deserved. It involves forgiving the debt, absolving the unabsolvable. Mercy brings us to the miracle of apology, given and accepted, to unashamed humility when we have erred or forgotten”. This is a quotation from a new book I have been reading this week by Anne Lamott. I have several of her books and enjoy reading them over and over, this one entitled ‘Hallelujah Anyway’, is just perfect for Easter Day and for our Mobile Photography & Art showcase. You see, mobile imagery is created by some of the most wonderful artists, living today, in our world. So many of these artists cast doubts to their talents and they should not. Whenever I am lucky enough to talk with these artists in person, I feel it. The most important thing and I say it time after time, is to believe in yourself, in your abilities and to be kind to yourself. Life, this life, is not a competition. It’s not about winning the next one, or being in the next exhibition, it’s nice when it happens, if you want it to but don’t centre on that. Have mercy on yourself and on others and let your talents shine through.  I will see it, whether I’m representing a competition or not, I will see your work, keep going, do not stop but rest and take a break when you need to. Keep paying attention and feed your souls.

Happy Easter!

“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” Dorothea Lange

Hello everyone!

Thank you all for submitting your images to our StreetWise Flickr group during the month of March.  All we can say is “wow!” What incredible images submitted to our group from around the world. It is such an honor to share the showcases with you.

Once again, our difficult challenge was to choose such few images for the showcase from all those that were submitted and we want you to know we appreciate each and every post.

As a reminder, we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group’s intention and guidelines focusing on the key aspects of street photography  composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment  rather than relying too much on apping or images that are more art oriented or painterly.

If you are a mobile street photographer, please consider joining our growing community.

To those new to our street photography community, welcome – it is great to have you join us!

We want a mate who feels like family and a lover who is exotic, surprising. We want to be youthful adventurers and middle-aged mothers. We want intimacy and autonomy, safety and stimulation, reassurance and novelty, coziness and thrills. But we can’t have it all”, says Ariel Levy; the New Yorker writer who had a life that balanced domesticity with intellectual and sexual adventure and then it fell apart, dramatically. This from her memoir ‘The Rules do not Apply’. I have been reading it this week.  Essentially, this book is about the desire to have it all and how that can literally be blown apart. One thing in particular struck me reading this book, Levy does not give herself any compassion, it’s left to the reader to fill that gap. This is a book that (in my opinion) you should order for all the women that you love. Each week, like many of us, I read, view and embrace all that I can around me. I surround myself in the very best of art and of life. Our Mobile Photography and Flickr Group is a good grounding base. Sometimes, when the days have not gone to plan, people have been unpredictable, I know that I can go back to our group and feel nurtured. Because each week your work reaches new heights. Not to say that your work is predictable because it is not, the growing unpredictability tightens the narrative and it is easy to see why the artists featured here have earned a place among the finest mobile photographers working today. We have our freedom and we use it very very well. Thank you!

You may have heard of Dr Megan Poe, she is a 42 year old psychiatrist and associate professor who teaches an undergraduate course on love, which she designed at New York University. It has achieved overwhelming success. The course is called ‘Love Actually’ and attempts to pack as much about the human experience of love in, as is possible. The course leans heavily on the work of Eric Fromm, the psychologist best known for his 1956 book, The Art of Loving, that I mentioned a few weeks ago, here. What I love about the syllabus of this class, is at its core, albeit a psychology class, its emphasis is on love, through art. As described in The Guardian ‘where the psychology inhabits the artwork on a kind of cellular level‘. They look at poets like Rainer Maria Rilke and they study Romeo and Juliet as a way to explore the intensity and emotional urges of adolescent love. What I would bring to this course, if I was exploring it, would be your mobile photography and art, because on a richly transcendent level, it is love, it has been created and produced with love, in those special and sacred moments, when you have made time, for yourselves, which in this analogy could be classed as self love and self love is excruciatingly important. You must love yourselves, for I love you all. I do hope you enjoy this wonderful showcase this week, thank you all for contributing.

Photographs turn the present into past, make contingency into destiny. Whatever their degree of “realism,” all photographs embody a “romantic” relation to reality“, wrote Susan Sontag in the preface to Peter Hujar’s incredible (and now out of print) book ‘Portraits in Life and Death‘. She went on to write, “Photographs instigate, confirm, seal legends. Seen through photographs, people become icons of themselves. Photography converts the world itself into a department store or museum-without-walls in which every subject is depreciated into an article of consumption, promoted into an item for esthetic appreciation. Photography also converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also — wittingly or unwittingly — the recording-angels of death. The photograph-as-photograph shows death. More than that, it shows the sex-appeal of death“. Of course, this much is true. Having lost far to many close friends, the photographs, recordings that I have continue to keep those alive, to me, they help to keep me close, to appreciate the exisitance of love, lost. With mobile photography, it is possible to capture so much and so often, lives are sustained, photography unites in life as in death.

Line is a rich metaphor for the artists…” Lance Epslund

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our Tenth StreetWise Challenge Showcase  ‘Lines in the Street.’ We are thrilled to share it with you!

Thank you so much for participating and sharing your wonderful photographs. Lee and I were delighted by all the beautiful submissions to this fun challenge. Lines denote so many things in photography, boundary, edge, or contour — it is the agent for energy and movement and it was wonderful to see the many ways in which people incorporated lines in their photographs

As always, Lee and I hope you enjoy the showcase as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
