Have you ever written or received a hand written love letter? I grew up writing and reading letters, they were an important part of life. The letters I received were mostly not from other English loves but from elsewhere around the world. Could it be the French, Spanish, Italian, Americans are more romantic? Or could it be that corresponding with people in other counties created greater infatuation? It’s far quicker and easier to breeze through an email but it never feels the same, as receiving a scented handwritten letter. Nostalgia about letter writing is nothing new. Whenever a cultural form starts to die, people start celebrating it, think vinyl records, polaroid photographs, 35 mm film. Scent is a crucially important sense in humans, darkroom smells are omnipresent with me. It’s not a fetish but what is it? What do we all hanker for? It’s love, Erich Fromm expressed Modern man thinks he loses something – time – when he does not do things quickly. Yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains, except kill it” and it’s true. Whilst ‘saving’ time, give what you gain to your loves, grow your love, develop it and share it. Art, writing, painting, photographing, making love, teaches us to be more than just towards ourselves as we endeavour to make the best of our circumstances. Keep forever in mind the real ingredients of fulfilment, do not lose sight of the value of everything that is to hand. Trust more in your ideas and feelings than objects. Above all, remember to love and to care. Enjoy the beauty of existence. Have courage, to keep loving, you’ll never regret loving and being loved.

“You can learn a lot about a person from the way he or she eats — about the extent of his physical appetites and the way they are satisfied. There are those who will try anything offered to them, no matter how new or exotic, while others refuse to accept any but the most familiar fare — obviously not the adventurous type to new experiences”. A quote from a book that caught my eye this week, ‘The Seducer’s Cookbook’ by Mimi Sheraton, I thoroughly recommend it. Whenever I dine out with someone new, it’s always telling to me, discovering the others’ tastes and I have discovered that’s it’s not just what the other selects, it’s how they consume it, I love experimenting! Whether we’re discussing culinary advice, as artists we are constantly aware that art itself, is the foundation for any experience. Art has an immortal lifeline, it evolves and progresses. Each day new art is created, because each day we are evolving. Artists have an essential role in art, initiating conversation with their audience. We work simulanteously creating unique moments than can never be replicated and thus this leads on to this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Showcase. The experience is the most important part of any art, enjoy!

Mobile Photography Competition – H2O FOR PEACE – IPHONEOGRAPHY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Share

This new initiative, called H2O for Peace – iPhoneography for Human Rights, features an international photographic competition in collaboration with the NEM – the New Era Museum (a Virtual Museum and International Artistic Movement) which has made specific images captured and revisited by smartphones its philosophy.

The competition ends at the beginning of June with the selection of the finalists and the proclamation of the winner. The works chosen will be screened at the Fondazione Campana dei Caduti, Rovereto and included in a video clip with music by Marco Testoni performed by the Pollock Art-Jazz Project. Along with the photographs selected, visitors may view the video at the Foundation, on the social networks and the web, as well as during international events aimed at highlighting the results obtained and the emotions aroused by the competitors’ works.

This campaign has chosen the art which more than any other spells sharing: iPhoneography, as we know is a widespread, democratic art which permits people to create images using their smartphones and share them on the internet and the social networks. The enormous potential of this art make it the ideal creative medium for providing the whole world with a means of speaking about an important topic like water. This art, born on the social web, is now examined and studied in for its intrinsic worth and its strongly democratic nature also within traditional photographic environments.

The president of the jury is Andrea Bigiarini, originator and founder of the NEM. The works will also be adjudicated by: Marco Di Battista, Dilshad Corleone, Giancarlo Beltrame, Davide Capponi.

Mobile Photography – Portrait of An Artist – Twenty Fourth Video Showcase

Share

Oh gosh, feel the heat in this mobile photography Portrait of an Artist showcase! So many thanks to our Portraiture editor Ile Mont, for curating and nurturing this quality showcase. This is a great driver, translating just how good mobile portraiture really is.

Curation and text by

Ile Mont

Welcome to our twenty fourth Portrait of an Artist Showcase! This Showcase complements our Portrait of an Artist Column edited by myself. Every few weeks I review and curate work that has been submitted to our dedicated Flickr group. In addition, Joanne Carter creates a showcase video which features a sampling of submitted work, we will also highlight a few images that have caught our attention… offering some thoughtful commentary about technique, composition and subject matter.

If you are not a member of our Facebook group… we highly recommend that you join us! This is our space for sharing newsworthy information and conducting discussions (what, when, where, why and how) regarding mobile portraiture and portraiture in general.

Please join our Facebook group for information sharing/discussions (link here)

Please upload your portraiture images to our Flickr Group for fortnightly showcase submissions (link here)
