Have you ever written or received a hand written love letter? I grew up writing and reading letters, they were an important part of life. The letters I received were mostly not from other English loves but from elsewhere around the world. Could it be the French, Spanish, Italian, Americans are more romantic? Or could it be that corresponding with people in other counties created greater infatuation? It’s far quicker and easier to breeze through an email but it never feels the same, as receiving a scented handwritten letter. Nostalgia about letter writing is nothing new. Whenever a cultural form starts to die, people start celebrating it, think vinyl records, polaroid photographs, 35 mm film. Scent is a crucially important sense in humans, darkroom smells are omnipresent with me. It’s not a fetish but what is it? What do we all hanker for? It’s love, Erich Fromm expressed Modern man thinks he loses something – time – when he does not do things quickly. Yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains, except kill it” and it’s true. Whilst ‘saving’ time, give what you gain to your loves, grow your love, develop it and share it. Art, writing, painting, photographing, making love, teaches us to be more than just towards ourselves as we endeavour to make the best of our circumstances. Keep forever in mind the real ingredients of fulfilment, do not lose sight of the value of everything that is to hand. Trust more in your ideas and feelings than objects. Above all, remember to love and to care. Enjoy the beauty of existence. Have courage, to keep loving, you’ll never regret loving and being loved.

We want a mate who feels like family and a lover who is exotic, surprising. We want to be youthful adventurers and middle-aged mothers. We want intimacy and autonomy, safety and stimulation, reassurance and novelty, coziness and thrills. But we can’t have it all”, says Ariel Levy; the New Yorker writer who had a life that balanced domesticity with intellectual and sexual adventure and then it fell apart, dramatically. This from her memoir ‘The Rules do not Apply’. I have been reading it this week.  Essentially, this book is about the desire to have it all and how that can literally be blown apart. One thing in particular struck me reading this book, Levy does not give herself any compassion, it’s left to the reader to fill that gap. This is a book that (in my opinion) you should order for all the women that you love. Each week, like many of us, I read, view and embrace all that I can around me. I surround myself in the very best of art and of life. Our Mobile Photography and Flickr Group is a good grounding base. Sometimes, when the days have not gone to plan, people have been unpredictable, I know that I can go back to our group and feel nurtured. Because each week your work reaches new heights. Not to say that your work is predictable because it is not, the growing unpredictability tightens the narrative and it is easy to see why the artists featured here have earned a place among the finest mobile photographers working today. We have our freedom and we use it very very well. Thank you!

Photographs turn the present into past, make contingency into destiny. Whatever their degree of “realism,” all photographs embody a “romantic” relation to reality“, wrote Susan Sontag in the preface to Peter Hujar’s incredible (and now out of print) book ‘Portraits in Life and Death‘. She went on to write, “Photographs instigate, confirm, seal legends. Seen through photographs, people become icons of themselves. Photography converts the world itself into a department store or museum-without-walls in which every subject is depreciated into an article of consumption, promoted into an item for esthetic appreciation. Photography also converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also — wittingly or unwittingly — the recording-angels of death. The photograph-as-photograph shows death. More than that, it shows the sex-appeal of death“. Of course, this much is true. Having lost far to many close friends, the photographs, recordings that I have continue to keep those alive, to me, they help to keep me close, to appreciate the exisitance of love, lost. With mobile photography, it is possible to capture so much and so often, lives are sustained, photography unites in life as in death.

Wow! What a week for mobile photography and art imagery! You’ve all kept me very busy this morning/afternoon, selecting your images and placing them, carefully into this showcase. So much so, that my mind has almost gone blank with what to say. Usually, on a Sunday, after I have worked on our showcase, I assimilate some words and thoughts, things I have been thinking over during the week, perhaps. Of course, this week took in Valentines Day, which to many of us means love. So, of course, that got me thinking, of the Valentines week that I spent with my love and also, I thought of, perhaps in view of many of the images and messages I received, from others, that perhaps some have not had a love to share it with this year. That’s happened to me of course, we have all felt that at various times in our lives, perhaps when a person we shared a love history with has not come true or just when we have enjoyed our own company. Some say, you don’t find love, love finds you. I have to confess that many of my loves, have found me, in fact most of the time I wasn’t even aware that love was before me, but others noticed and pointed it out. What I do know is that however we do find love, or it finds us, enduring love, is something we have to make, to work on. Humans are imperfect and sustaining love, sometimes in difficult circumstances is challenging, but very worthwhile.

Well, it seems I did find something to say afterall. Thank you everyone for sharing your truly stunning images with us this week. This is definitely a very beautiful showcase.

Experiences in art and life, fuelled with intense sensuality, releases explosive beauty which returns us to the pleasure of physical encounters, astonishingly connecting. Rooted in the moment, shaping our own emotional and artistic lives. Mon amour pour toi est éternel. The rhythm of art and life is one that we all share. Experiment within it, find colour and line, stay conscious and feel connected, expressive and free, albeit a symphony of love itself.  Le cœur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît point. “There are so many things that art can’t do. It can’t bring the dead back to life, it can’t mend arguments between friends, or cure AIDS, or halt the pace of climate change. All the same, it does have some extraordinary functions, some odd negotiating ability between people, including people who never meet and yet who infiltrate and enrich each other’s lives. It does have a capacity to create intimacy; it does have a way of healing wounds, and better yet of making it apparent that not all wounds need healing and not all scars are ugly”. Another quote from the book that I am still studying (that I mentioned last week), ‘The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone’ by Olivia Laing. Speaking from personal experience, this is how I view what we do here at TheAppWhisperer, sharing art, infiltrating each other’s lives with such richness, enables us to resonate with a divine sense of wholeness. This weeks mobile photography and flickr group showcase is tantamount to that. Enjoy!
