Photographs turn the present into past, make contingency into destiny. Whatever their degree of “realism,” all photographs embody a “romantic” relation to reality“, wrote Susan Sontag in the preface to Peter Hujar’s incredible (and now out of print) book ‘Portraits in Life and Death‘. She went on to write, “Photographs instigate, confirm, seal legends. Seen through photographs, people become icons of themselves. Photography converts the world itself into a department store or museum-without-walls in which every subject is depreciated into an article of consumption, promoted into an item for esthetic appreciation. Photography also converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also — wittingly or unwittingly — the recording-angels of death. The photograph-as-photograph shows death. More than that, it shows the sex-appeal of death“. Of course, this much is true. Having lost far to many close friends, the photographs, recordings that I have continue to keep those alive, to me, they help to keep me close, to appreciate the exisitance of love, lost. With mobile photography, it is possible to capture so much and so often, lives are sustained, photography unites in life as in death.

Wow! What a week for mobile photography and art imagery! You’ve all kept me very busy this morning/afternoon, selecting your images and placing them, carefully into this showcase. So much so, that my mind has almost gone blank with what to say. Usually, on a Sunday, after I have worked on our showcase, I assimilate some words and thoughts, things I have been thinking over during the week, perhaps. Of course, this week took in Valentines Day, which to many of us means love. So, of course, that got me thinking, of the Valentines week that I spent with my love and also, I thought of, perhaps in view of many of the images and messages I received, from others, that perhaps some have not had a love to share it with this year. That’s happened to me of course, we have all felt that at various times in our lives, perhaps when a person we shared a love history with has not come true or just when we have enjoyed our own company. Some say, you don’t find love, love finds you. I have to confess that many of my loves, have found me, in fact most of the time I wasn’t even aware that love was before me, but others noticed and pointed it out. What I do know is that however we do find love, or it finds us, enduring love, is something we have to make, to work on. Humans are imperfect and sustaining love, sometimes in difficult circumstances is challenging, but very worthwhile.

Well, it seems I did find something to say afterall. Thank you everyone for sharing your truly stunning images with us this week. This is definitely a very beautiful showcase.

If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art flickr group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here. If you would like to view our previous Flickr Group Showcases (please go here).

"There were things that burned away at me, not only as a private individual, but also as a citizen of our century, our pixelated age. What does it mean to be lonely? How do we live, if we’re not intimately engaged with another human being? How do we connect with other people, particularly if we don’t find speaking easy? Is sex a cure for loneliness, and if it is, what happens if our body or sexuality is considered deviant or damaged, if we are ill or unblessed with beauty? And is technology helping with these things? Does it draw us closer together, or trap us behind screens"?  A quote from a book that I am currently reading by a truly wondrous writer, Olivia Laing. The book is entitled ‘The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone’. I urge you to read it. Laing wrote this book following the end of a romantic relationship and decided to leave Britain and head to New York. Essentially this book as is our Mobile Photography and Flickr Group Showcase this week, is about learning to befriend yourself. Laing goes on to say, "what matters is staying alert, staying open, because if we know anything from what has gone before us, it is that the time for feeling will not last". Please enjoy this multilayered showcase, the artists and their art, know no bounds. This is a showcase that is intrinsic to the very notion of being alive, right now.

“Never say you know the last word about any human heart”, a quotation by Henry James from the rich tapestry of a book I am currently reading, Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Art links all around us and we need to be able to tie it altogether, to make it whole. Human expression within this weeks mobile photography and art Flickr Group Showcase, speaks to us. Worldly wise, yet perilously frail, many of these images demonstrate the agony and ecstasy of love and life lived. This weeks showcase is a wholly humane romance and a worthy treat for all of us. Enjoy!

We are delighted to announce two new editors will be joining us here at TheAppWhisperer to assist with our Portrait of an Artist popular mobile portraiture group. Jennifer Bracewell is currently taking a temporary break and we are very pleased to welcome Michelle Robinson and Ile Mont as co-editors. The door is held widely open for Jennifer’s return, whenever that may be and we look forward to her joining this fabulous team! Robinson and Mont are both highly talented mobile portraiture artists themselves and are hugely supportive of this medium.

Our Portrait of an Artist Column will continue along the theme that we have always had, with artists uploading their images to our Flickr group and thus our editors curating, commenting and interviewing mobile artists. Our Facebook group that complements our Column and Flickr Group is for commentary and conversation.

TheAppWhisperer is growing at a phenomenal rate and trying to include as much unique content and variety from the mobile photography world as our readers can possibly digest, you really don’t need to go anywhere else! I will be making some changes to a few of the other groups that we have and announcing those very soon, stayed tuned for that!

Please join us in warmly welcoming Michelle Robinson and Ile Mont to TheAppWhisperer family, welcome to you both! You can read a little more about them below.
