“I love the people I photograph. I mean, they’re my friends. I’ve never met most of them or I don’t know them at all, yet through my images I live with them.” Bruce Gilden

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for submitting your images to StreetWise Flickr group for our ‘Winter Showcase.’

We were touched by the soulfulness and warmth of your photos – beautiful winter scenes (whether in tropical or snowy settings) of people (and animals) looking out windows, windows as frames, windows reflecting cityscapes, people in public transportation, carrying umbrellas, lone figures in urban landscapes and photos of people connecting hand in hand, or embracing one another. Even in the often darker, bleaker times of the winter months, when taking street photos can present a challenge, so many of your images captured what it means to be human – our fragility and our connection to one another.

We are inspired by this international group and it is our honor for Ilana and I to curate so many wonderful artists from around the world, and to ultimately, share the showcases with you.

Ilana and I find it very difficult to choose such few images for the showcase from all those that were submitted and we want you to know that we appreciate each and every post!

As a reminder, we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group’s intention and guidelines focusing on key aspects of street photography composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment rather than relying on too much aping or images that are more art oriented or painterly.

If you are a street photographer, please consider joining our growing community. To those new to our community, welcome – it’s great to have you join us!

Please continue to post your images to StreetWise Flickr group for showcase submissions:

https://www.flickr.com/groups/2750883@N25/pool/

Please note that StreetWise Facebook page is NOT for posting photographs but for sharing information/discussions, thank you!

A special thank you to Joanne.

We hope you feel inspired by this showcase and our wonderful group. Until next time, happy shooting everyone!

Many congratulations to the following artists for being featured in our showcase including:

Basak Aytek, Daniel Vondav, Donna Donato, Dina Alfasi, Paula Betlem, Carlein, Kathy Clay, Vanessa Vox, Mark Fearnley, Allyson, Susan Rennie, Armineh Hovanesian, Julia Nathanson, Isabelle Wolter, Marc Zetterblom, Ger van den Elzen,  Michel Dev1, Karen Axelrad, Michael Beresin, Laurence Bouchard, Paul Yan, Ocean Morisset, Christine Mignon, Myrna, Giulia Baita, Nick Kenrick, Luison, JH McB, Dixon Hamby, Valeria Cammareri, and Rene Valencia

I’ve been really excited this week because I have created a new interview platform within TheAppWhisperer that allows artists to answer the textual questions we ask, visually and the results have been spectacular. I have wanted to do this for sometime. As I explained elsewhere on the internet, my thought processes behind this format of interview are based on not only my life experiences but also on some of my professional qualifications. I have been surrounded my entire life by people who find communicating in a neurotypical way, difficult. I believe and have always believed that the onus is on the person trying to interpret what is being communicated, to understand. Just as a profoundly deaf person uses sign language to communicate with another, to understand, we also need to acquire it, so we can transcribe their thoughts and communicate ours to them. There is an integral part of our society who share difficulties with communication and because of this, many struggle with relationships and this hinders not only their own but also our life experiences. Many of you will be aware of Temple Grandin, in Thinking in Pictures, she explains “words are like a second language for me”. Many years ago, I shared an audience with her, a truly remarkable presence. I am not suggesting here, for one moment that visual artists are on the autistic spectrum, it is far more complex than that but I am aware that their images, portray their best chance of being understood. Therefore, if we are to truly embrace all of society, we need to allow them to communicate to us, in their natural default way and we need to think laterally and to re-skill. Language can be the barrier, it is up to us to lower the fence if we are to truly unriddle their psyches. When we enter an art gallery, rarely are we met with an oral interpretation of the images displayed on the walls. There’s almost a silence, with many people gathered around a painting as each of their brains scramble to decipher what they are viewing. It’s an observation that is fascinating to view and it is one that visual artists also find compelling, you’ll see many examples of this in our weekly showcase of mobile photography and art. The world needs all of us, we are all interested in art, the great mobile artists that we see here, in this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, are not so much theologians as brilliant analysts of the human heart.

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

I didn’t know I was even supposed to HAVE issues until I came to America”, a quote from a book I am currently reading – Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. A fearless contemporary construction about immigration, racism, American dreams and love. Adichie has the unique ability to meticulously and deeply humanise language, capturing a familiar plot but making it fresh. I read vast ranges of books, never fixating on a genre. I am the same when studying photography and art. I’m influenced by and interested in artists who break rules about genre. I’m interested in images with multiple levels that repay close inspection, ensuring I go to unexpected places. A coherent image makes me suspicious, I prefer faltering because it’s in those wobbles that I see the chafing and the uneasiness, the sketchiness of thought and vision. When viewing demiurgic imagery, I am intellectually and creatively and sometimes erotically wired. Constructing a book is similar to creating an image, it’s knowing what to include as well as omit. Allowing the viewer space to complete the construction, in their own imagination, constraining the compulsion of the artist to complete. Sculptors address the deletion of material in their own analogous way. Michelangelo: “The more the marble wastes, the more the statue grows”.

We have a choice, to give ourselves permission to go where ever our thoughts take us and when we do that, we can feel the incredibly rush of creativity and excitement this exists within all of us. My body, my choice, turn your fears into excitement, your anxieties into enthusiasm and your passion into energy. I am not one to read lonely hearts ad’s per se, however I do love history and found myself pre Valentine’s wondering when the first lonely hearts ad may have been written. I think I found it, in 1695 a ‘gentleman about 30 years of age’ placed at least one of the first recorded lonely hearts ad’s and he was seeking ‘some good young gentlewoman that has a Fortune of 3000 l. or thereabout’. £3k is equal to around £260k ($340k) today.  This chap had his eyes set on more than love it’s plain to see, no second guessing needed with this guy… I turn again and again to ‘The Art of Loving’, Eric Fromm not least because “Love is not primarily a relationship to a specific person; it is an attitude, an orientation of character which determines the relatedness of a person to the world as a whole, not toward one “object” of love. If a person loves only one other person and is indifferent to the rest of his fellow men, his love is not love but a symbiotic attachment, or an enlarged egotism. Yet, most people believe that love is constituted by the object, not by the faculty.” What I have learned (so far), is that love is not a passive activity, it requires consciousness, dedication and it requires more giving than receiving…

The generosity of art displayed in this weeks Mobile Photography & Art Showcase embraces each viewer inside our cultured artform. Within each artists work there is a freedom of obligations, freedom of inevitability, each work has been constructed to elicit entirely what was desired. The liberation that comes from creating fast and loose whilst being observed is perfectly canny. Each frame communicates, illuminates and demands the freedom of movement, like free verse this is a wonderfully malleable collection that flows with a kind of rhythmic thinking. This is realism, raw truth that is underlined by artistic authenticity, as accomplished mobile artistis know, the real passion lies in reality itself.
