Visualising Mobile Photography and Art Interview with Joyce Harkin from the United Kingdom

Share

Today, we are publishing our twenty seventh visual interview, this time with Joyce Harkin from the United Kingdom. Harkin’s art is an amalgamation of dichotomies: inside/outside, public/private, high/low – all dynamic. Her images speak eloquently to us about our own life experiences at the same depicting her own. One of Harkin’s most admirable qualities as an artist, is her hunger for inspiration and this is reflected in her varied work. When embarking on a new creation, Harkin reaches the summit, she uniquely manages to not only arrive with an aesthetically pleasing visual image but one which ensures all the elements involved are included as intended.

I am so excited about this new Interview section within TheAppWhisperer. A picture speaks a thousand words, so says the English language idiom and as this is a website by and for visual artists, we felt this section was long overdue. We asked a series of mobile photographers and artists ten questions, in text format and we asked them to respond in their very best way, visually and in their own style of photography/art, the results are unique and incredibly exciting.

To read our previously published interviews, with Deborah McMillion, M. Cecilia Sao Thiago, Christine Sobczak, Liliana Schwitter, Armineh Hovanesian, Lorenka Campos, Donna Donato, Eliza Badoiu, Juta Jazz, Susan Rennie, Kate Zari Roberts, Lynette Sheppard, Debara Splendorio, Irene Oleksiuk, Davide Capponi, Vanessa Vox, Amanda Parker, Clint Cline, Christine Mignon, Bonobo Stone, Jerry Jobe, Joshua Sarinana, Meri Walker, Alexis Rotella, Jenny Pieters and Alon Goldsmith please go here.

Today, we are publishing our twenty fifth visual interview, this time with Jenny Pieters from South Africa. Pieters art strikes me as bursting with emotional depth and context. There’s a tenderness within her way of seeing, mixed with hope and despair but more so with light. With an evocation of time and place, her images imbue a deep sense interconnecting with us all, deeply. Her work is about honesty and trust with immense integrity and deserving of our unmitigated respect. (foreword by Joanne Carter)

We are so grateful to @sunflowerof21 – Elaine Taylor, whom we entrusted with our Instagram account for 21 days after she was gracefully handed the baton by @tankaqueen – Alexis Rotella. To view all the posts in the series, please go here. Or of course, head over to our @theappwhisperer Instagram account.

On Day 18 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @ikebana_jen – Jennifer Thomas and she writes “@sunflowerof21 here with my next feature from #theappwhisperer tag. What a pleasure it is to share Jen’s image – it’s absolutely gorgeous and so beautifully edited. I adore the textures, details, colours and mood. It’s a work of art!”.

On Day 19 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @italianbrother – Dilshad Corleone and she writes “This is stunning. Those eyes! I love Dil’s portraits – they’re always so captivating and attention-grabbing. Each face full of character, giving a hint to its own unique story. What a treat it is to feature Dil’s work as part of my takeover here. ~ @sunflowerof21″

On Day 20 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @hipstaniteaelle and she writes “I’m a huge fan of the Hipstamatic app. It was the first app I ever downloaded and the one that started my mobile photography passion. Through doing my Hipstamatic 365 project (@sunflowerof21_365) I’ve discovered some amazing igers who use the app to create their images. @hipstanitaelle is one of those. Her feed is wonderful, and full of great Hipstamatic combos. This image is one of my favourites – I love it! ~ @sunflowerof21″.

On Day 21 @sunflowerof21 highlighted the work of @iphoneartgirl – Meri Walker and she writes “@sunflowerof21 here with my final selection from the #theappwhisperer tag. What a beautiful way to finish this takeover. I’ve saved one of my favourites until last. Meri is an amazing mobile artist and an absolute gem in the mobile photography world. One in a million!”

Later on Day 21 @sunflowerof21 dedicated a beautiful image to myself, what an honour, thank you so much dear Elaine and she writes “Hello. @sunflowerof21 signing off from my takeover. Thanks to everyone who followed along. It’s been an honour and a pleasure to have had the reigns of this account over the past 3 weeks. I’m dedicating this image, one of my own, to Joanne Carter to say thank you for for the opportunity. And now I hand the reigns over to one of the best mobile photographers I know – @luison/@luison_street . I’ve shouted loud about how much of a fan I am of his work. I can’t wait to see his selections. Have fun Luis!”

So, very sadly for us we have to ask @sunflowerof21 to hand over the baton to our next featured artist. We are going to miss her (but we have a feeling, she’s not going too far 😉 and we do know that you are all going to be very excited indeed when we tell you who she is handing over the baton to next.

Please keep tagging your images with #TheAppWhisperer if you would like our new featured artist to find your art and hope to be found and possibly featured.

Mobile Photography – Instagram TAKEOVER with Meri Walker (@iphoneartgirl) and David Leibowitz (@dleibo) Day 14

Share

Wow! What an incredible fortnight it has been with both Meri Walker (@iPhoneArtGirl) and David Leibowitz (@dleibo) taking over our Instagram feed! Their vision is exemplary, we have loved every post, take a look at their final posts below…

On day 14 @iphoneartgirl featured this stunning image by @ratspeaker and she writes@iphoneartgirl here, huddled by the heater for @theappwhisperer with an unusually unusual monochrome shot by @ratspeaker. Ted’s images often pull me up short and this one does so more than most. There must be a million ways to capture the flight of an egret… yet the quirky poetry of this one leaves me marveling at how this creature ever flies. Or, for that matter, how it stops flying to “land.” The vulnerability of the creature is front and center here. Beautiful!”

Later on day 14 @dleibo featured @catherinecaddigan and he writes @dleibo here for @theappwhisperer : I found myself throughly enjoying the way @catherinecaddigan made this bird fly. The drop shadow and 2D illustrated globe position this flapping bird off the surface of the screen. I love that! I’m thrown off by the lack of a balanced composition. The bird faces left and the globe is left of center leaving the light shape and word “Air” to find a visual balance. But if fails and in doing so, leaves me flapping my wings, searching for balance and…WAIT, flapping my wings …searching for balance? OK, I get it now”.

Later still @dleibo featured @sandraanykerk and he writes @dleibo here for @theappwhisperer : This image by @sandranykerk caught my eye as a brilliant, minimal composition with a subtle palette that added up to a piece with incredible visual impact . Using so little to gain so much…Then I notice a tag @Yellowstone and gain an even greater appreciation for Sandra’s eye, as she also managed to capture the park’s stark beauty in a extremely precise vision”.

What a fabulous fortnight it has been with these two incredible mobile artists. To round off their journey on day 15 they featured each other with @iphoneartgirl writing @iphoneartgirl making my last post for @theappwhisperer during my IG takeover with @dleibo. This is my shot, made this evening during a beautiful dinner with David as we were discussing what we learned and enjoyed most about our collaboration over the last two weeks. The thing about David is when he pays attention, it’s golden. At least that’s how it is for me. I’m thinking it might’ve been the way it’s been for the rest of you when he’s been curating your images over this period of time. I’ve learned a lot having the opportunity to do this daily searching through #theappwhisperer tag, not the least of which is how differently David and I see individual pieces of mobile photography and mobile art. The best part of this process for me has been allowing our different backgrounds and our different tastes and our different technical skills to highlight the works of so many different people. Thank you so much for your attention and your kindness. And thank you again, @theappwhisperer, for offering us this opportunity. I, for one, will really be looking forward to future curators’ points of view. Love to all of you ❤👈🏿

and with Leibowitz writing@dleibo here for @theappwhisperer : This has been fun, carefully curating this extraordinary feed of Mobile Art. Doing it with iPhoneArtGirl, well, now we’re talking! How lucky am I, having her next to me, shooting, editing and in a constant conversation about this crazy-ass thing we all love to do. As my closing selection, I picked my own portrait of Meri Walker so you got a small sense of our amazing synergy. I want to thank Joanne for this opportunity and you all for your kind reception of my selections and of my definition of “what is art”.

Thank you so much dear Meri and David for a fabulous fourteen days, what an exhilarating journey it has been to see #theappwhisperer through your eyes, its been so good, thank you both!

Please continue to tag all your images with #theappwhisperer as we have a new curator starting soon…
