Have you ever written or received a hand written love letter? I grew up writing and reading letters, they were an important part of life. The letters I received were mostly not from other English loves but from elsewhere around the world. Could it be the French, Spanish, Italian, Americans are more romantic? Or could it be that corresponding with people in other counties created greater infatuation? It’s far quicker and easier to breeze through an email but it never feels the same, as receiving a scented handwritten letter. Nostalgia about letter writing is nothing new. Whenever a cultural form starts to die, people start celebrating it, think vinyl records, polaroid photographs, 35 mm film. Scent is a crucially important sense in humans, darkroom smells are omnipresent with me. It’s not a fetish but what is it? What do we all hanker for? It’s love, Erich Fromm expressed Modern man thinks he loses something – time – when he does not do things quickly. Yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains, except kill it” and it’s true. Whilst ‘saving’ time, give what you gain to your loves, grow your love, develop it and share it. Art, writing, painting, photographing, making love, teaches us to be more than just towards ourselves as we endeavour to make the best of our circumstances. Keep forever in mind the real ingredients of fulfilment, do not lose sight of the value of everything that is to hand. Trust more in your ideas and feelings than objects. Above all, remember to love and to care. Enjoy the beauty of existence. Have courage, to keep loving, you’ll never regret loving and being loved.

“You can learn a lot about a person from the way he or she eats — about the extent of his physical appetites and the way they are satisfied. There are those who will try anything offered to them, no matter how new or exotic, while others refuse to accept any but the most familiar fare — obviously not the adventurous type to new experiences”. A quote from a book that caught my eye this week, ‘The Seducer’s Cookbook’ by Mimi Sheraton, I thoroughly recommend it. Whenever I dine out with someone new, it’s always telling to me, discovering the others’ tastes and I have discovered that’s it’s not just what the other selects, it’s how they consume it, I love experimenting! Whether we’re discussing culinary advice, as artists we are constantly aware that art itself, is the foundation for any experience. Art has an immortal lifeline, it evolves and progresses. Each day new art is created, because each day we are evolving. Artists have an essential role in art, initiating conversation with their audience. We work simulanteously creating unique moments than can never be replicated and thus this leads on to this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Showcase. The experience is the most important part of any art, enjoy!

Larger than life, this weeks Mobile Photography and Art showcase is a potent theatrical nocturne of pure pleasure. This showcase offers an unashamedly intellectual and gripping example of how powerful mobile devices are and how talented are those that use them. This is more than an exhibition of elegant mobile art, it is truly a reflection on life and purpose.

“Mercy is radical kindness. Mercy means offering or being offered aid in desperate straits. Mercy is not deserved. It involves forgiving the debt, absolving the unabsolvable. Mercy brings us to the miracle of apology, given and accepted, to unashamed humility when we have erred or forgotten”. This is a quotation from a new book I have been reading this week by Anne Lamott. I have several of her books and enjoy reading them over and over, this one entitled ‘Hallelujah Anyway’, is just perfect for Easter Day and for our Mobile Photography & Art showcase. You see, mobile imagery is created by some of the most wonderful artists, living today, in our world. So many of these artists cast doubts to their talents and they should not. Whenever I am lucky enough to talk with these artists in person, I feel it. The most important thing and I say it time after time, is to believe in yourself, in your abilities and to be kind to yourself. Life, this life, is not a competition. It’s not about winning the next one, or being in the next exhibition, it’s nice when it happens, if you want it to but don’t centre on that. Have mercy on yourself and on others and let your talents shine through.  I will see it, whether I’m representing a competition or not, I will see your work, keep going, do not stop but rest and take a break when you need to. Keep paying attention and feed your souls.

Happy Easter!

We want a mate who feels like family and a lover who is exotic, surprising. We want to be youthful adventurers and middle-aged mothers. We want intimacy and autonomy, safety and stimulation, reassurance and novelty, coziness and thrills. But we can’t have it all”, says Ariel Levy; the New Yorker writer who had a life that balanced domesticity with intellectual and sexual adventure and then it fell apart, dramatically. This from her memoir ‘The Rules do not Apply’. I have been reading it this week.  Essentially, this book is about the desire to have it all and how that can literally be blown apart. One thing in particular struck me reading this book, Levy does not give herself any compassion, it’s left to the reader to fill that gap. This is a book that (in my opinion) you should order for all the women that you love. Each week, like many of us, I read, view and embrace all that I can around me. I surround myself in the very best of art and of life. Our Mobile Photography and Flickr Group is a good grounding base. Sometimes, when the days have not gone to plan, people have been unpredictable, I know that I can go back to our group and feel nurtured. Because each week your work reaches new heights. Not to say that your work is predictable because it is not, the growing unpredictability tightens the narrative and it is easy to see why the artists featured here have earned a place among the finest mobile photographers working today. We have our freedom and we use it very very well. Thank you!

You may have heard of Dr Megan Poe, she is a 42 year old psychiatrist and associate professor who teaches an undergraduate course on love, which she designed at New York University. It has achieved overwhelming success. The course is called ‘Love Actually’ and attempts to pack as much about the human experience of love in, as is possible. The course leans heavily on the work of Eric Fromm, the psychologist best known for his 1956 book, The Art of Loving, that I mentioned a few weeks ago, here. What I love about the syllabus of this class, is at its core, albeit a psychology class, its emphasis is on love, through art. As described in The Guardian ‘where the psychology inhabits the artwork on a kind of cellular level‘. They look at poets like Rainer Maria Rilke and they study Romeo and Juliet as a way to explore the intensity and emotional urges of adolescent love. What I would bring to this course, if I was exploring it, would be your mobile photography and art, because on a richly transcendent level, it is love, it has been created and produced with love, in those special and sacred moments, when you have made time, for yourselves, which in this analogy could be classed as self love and self love is excruciatingly important. You must love yourselves, for I love you all. I do hope you enjoy this wonderful showcase this week, thank you all for contributing.
