New Projects – Our New Form of Artistic Installation aka ‘The Quilt’ Is Ready!

Share

We’re delighted to inform our readers that the quilt that so many of you contributed to, has now been completed. For those of you not aware of this project, it involved mobile artists contributing one image and each one was then carefully included within a large quilt to be displayed at the next gallery show or even Mobile Arts Festival. There has been a few obstacles along the way and we have overcome each one. This quilt was sewed together and finalised by none other than mobile artist, Lorenka Campos’ mother in law. We all owe her much gratitude. The quilt is now with Lorenka Campos, so if you would like to display it at your next event, please contact her for details.

I have also been reminded and I shouldn’t have needed to be however, “Linda Toki did the whole layout of the quilt and had it printed. She also spent days working on the catalog so I really think she deserves a shout out as the quilt would never have happened without her”. We all need to give huge thanks to Linda M. Toki – join me!!

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 29 October 2017

This week has been an interesting one, half way through it I spoke with highly talented mobile artist, Jane Schulz on the telephone. Now hearing is not my forte, as many of you know, it comes with the territory of being severely to moderately deaf but I do try. I like to think of myself more as a listener. Anyway, between the bumps, silences and crashes of our telephone call, we discussed the ‘state’ of mobile photography and art today, not so much the talent, which rises each week but more the state of the community. To me, the community is the most important area, it’s one where we conjoin, work as one, support and nurture, laugh, share and take pleasure, together. Lately, it’s felt a little fragmented and there are an assortment of reasons for this. However, I didn’t really want to focus on those, I wanted us to focus on the positives and to bring it back and grow it even more. So, I steered and suggested to Schultz, we create a fabulous new post, honouring ThanksGiving, by thanking each and everyone of us, similar to our New Years Eve Resolutions post but with the emphasis on thanks. Schultz agreed and suggested we expand it across all of the spheres of the mobile photography community. Many of you would have received invitations from me to participate in TheAppWhisperer version of this – if you have not, then please take a look at our New Years Eve resolution page, and basing it on ThanksGiving, please think about what positive affects the Mobile Photography and Art Community has had on your life, send me a few sentences and also one image representing your thoughts. If you’ve received invitations from anywhere else within the community, please try to honour those too. Essentially, we are one and together we are a formidable positive force. #Together #LoveWins #RiseUP

Our Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group is central to our community and this weeks showcase is literally a cathartic crescendo of togetherness, thank you all.

Welcome to our fiftieth edition of “StreetsAhead,” a weekly column dedicated to women mobile street photographers. Each week we review and curate work that was submitted to our Flickr Group. In addition to creating a showcase video which features a sampling of submitted work, we also highlight a few images that caught our attention… offering some thoughtful commentary about technique, composition, and subject matter. If you are not a member of our Facebook group… we highly recommend that you join us!  This is our space for sharing newsworthy information and conducting discussions (what, when, where, why and how) about Women Photographers/Artists and Street Photography, in general.

So, if you are a woman street photographer, please join our growing community… I’m sure that you will agree that we are a very enthusiastic and supportive group of women!!

• Flickr Group (for weekly showcase submissions)

• Facebook Group (for information sharing/discussions)

I am completely enthralled by the atmosphere in this collection of hand-picked images as well as the articulate and expressive commentary by Gina Costa. Cara Gallardo Weil has put together such an intense video, almost unknowingly reinvigorating mobile street photography as we know it! Creative arts and rejection go hand in hand, the latter is almost part of the process. It’s not just within the creative arts that we hanker to be accepted, to suceed, to realise our dreams. We all need each other to thrive, it’s the nature of humanity, human beings need one another. A young child experiencing unconditional love will live, will thrive, will prosper, will flourish, grow and bloom. Love is essential to early development but other than early childhood, rejection is hardly physically life-threatning. But it hurts, rejection in any form hurts, because our feelings are deeply intimate.

When we are judged unfairly through untruths, the more upset we become and there are a lot of untruths out there…everyday we make more tears, none of us need more pain… So, for crying out loud, how do we make rejection work for us? How do we stop feeling bad? You must remember that one, or thousands of rejections, personal and/or professional, does not mean that you failed, it means you tried. Keep doing that, try again.

As I have mentioned before, art and health are in-explicity linked – there are obvious health benefits and we have to keep those beneifts in the forefront of our mindsets. You will never forget your first rejection, sometimes that rejection will stay with you, deeply. Rejection can teach you a lot about yourself and those around you. Keep in mind, the dignity of difference, keep in mind, we all feel pain, we all feel fear and most of all, we all feel love. We all have the capacity to make love, let’s focus on that.

This weeks Flickr mobile photograhy and art showcase is bursting with artists’ creations, artists that continue to create, continue to face their fears of rejection; knowing that not only will their work be judged but also the person behind the work.

Mobile Photography & Art – The Courage to be Afraid – Showcase for Carolyn Hall Young

Share

Recently, I set up a Facebook group entitled – The Courage to be Afraid – A Tender Tribute to Human Valiance with Carolyn Hall Young. Hall Young is our dear friend and hugely talented artist and many of you are aware that she is currently experiencing particularly challenging health issues. This group was made with love and is full of love from all the artists who have joined this group to create and share their images for her. I have complied each image into a film showcase, so that she can view all of them in one sitting (hopefully). When she is feeling more well, I am sure she will be able to vist the group and view all of your kind words in full (more so, than the space allows me to write the titles).

(Please do note, that I have gone through the group several times, searching for all the images for this particular showcase and I believe I have included everyone, if not, please just let me know and I will add you).

“Never say you know the last word about any human heart”, a quotation by Henry James from the rich tapestry of a book I am currently reading, Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Art links all around us and we need to be able to tie it altogether, to make it whole. Human expression within this weeks mobile photography and art Flickr Group Showcase, speaks to us. Worldly wise, yet perilously frail, many of these images demonstrate the agony and ecstasy of love and life lived. This weeks showcase is a wholly humane romance and a worthy treat for all of us. Enjoy!
