VSCO Closes New York Office

Share

The New York office of VSCO was opened last year to much fanfare, sadly for the company they have now had to close it and the staff have lost their jobs. According to the report in Techcrunch, some New York staff were offered opportunties to relocate to offices in Denver or Oakland locations.

VSCO redesigned their mobile applications last summer but the mobile photography community did not receive these updates favourably and their App Store ratings sunk. A further update was released in November last year, addressing some of the user complaints but perhaps that was not enough to save their New York office.

We will keep you informed of further progress in relation to this story.

Mobile Photography / Art Tutorial – VSCO: Heavy Hitter

Share

We are delighted to publish Jerry Jobe’s latest mobile photography/art tutorial for our viewing pleasure. This time Jobe takes a look at the very popular app, VSCO. Take it away Jerry…(foreword by Joanne Carter).

VSCO is free and you can download it here

“There are certain apps that are almost universally revered in the mobile photography/art community. I always find it difficult to review these apps and teach about them because there are so many users who are better with them than I am. I could not presume to teach anyone how to use Procreate, for example. My art technique is weak and besides, Procreate has an excellent Artists’ Handbook that is much more clear and wonderfully illustrated than I could do. Today’s app, VSCO by Visual Supply Company, is that go-to filtering app in mobile photography, and I’ve seen many wonderful images that use VSCO. I’ve held off writing about it, but let’s give it a spin!”

Hiring a studio space in NYC is expensive, that’s one of the reasons the VSCO Open Studio is hugely attractive. Located in the NoMad neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City, this studio is already kitted out with a permanent cyclorama, lighting equipment and other gear that can be borrowed, if needed.

The Open Studio is housed within VSCO’s NYC offices and is free to use. However, you will need to put down a $250 deposit to reserve the space. If you cancel within 72 hours of your session, you forfeit a deposit of $250. You will also be responsible for any damage to the space or any borrowed equipment. You’re allowed to bring along a maximum of six people and sessions are available once a week for 2-hour blocks.

If you would like to enquire or book a session in the Open Studio, just write to this email box – openstudio@vsco.co.
