Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 22 – By Donna Donato
Welcome back to the twenty-second article in the Column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’
All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.

‘Railway’ – TOPKON HORSEMAN
Who doesn’t love a train ride? This piece with its slightly blurred images, intermittent sounds of ‘wheels moving on the tracks’ and the nostalgic ““Scarborough Fair” re-enforces the notion that sometimes the rider is caught up in his/her own reverie, looking out without really seeing. The trip becomes merely the distance between here and there.
‘February the 28th, 2014’ – Vanessa Vox
In this time-lapse I felt like the fly on the proverbial wall watching shadows and light travel across tulips and the wall. Enjoyed the accompanying music that created expectation, suggested repetition and was slightly menacing.
‘Desayuno1’ – SOPHOCO
SOPHOCO offers a slide show of citrus and pomegranates interspersed with skyscapes. The stylized images combined with an intriguing soundtrack may give one a slightly different perspective of the morning grapefruit.
‘Countryside’ – Olivier_Olivierbxl
This time-lapse with its Beethoven soundtrack feels like an ode to the approaching spring and the beauty of nature. The wood and snow scene was like watching a piano being played.
‘BlowFishBlow’ – o ~
Ever had to sit in a waiting room where the magazines are old, worn and not very interesting? If you’re lucky there’s a corner aquarium with a fish like the star of this piece. You’ll smile at the catchy, ‘sitcomish’ samba tune. The end credits made me laugh out loud!
‘The Gates of Jupiter’ – Aldo Pacheco
This piece is a fast paced, mysterious slideshow. The mystery comes from the images which could be close-ups of brush strokes, perhaps aspects of the planet Jupiter or…

Donna is an image-maker, historian by training and a film/video editor by vocation. From a very early age she was smitten with images of all kinds. Donna absolutely loves film and filmmaking.
