Streets Ahead – Thirty Fourth Edition – Mobile Street Photography

Welcome to the thirty fourth edition of “Streets Ahead,” a weekly column dedicated to women mobile street photographers. Each week we review and curate work that was submitted to our Flickr Group. In addition to creating a showcase video which features a sampling of submitted work, we also highlight a few images that caught our attention… offering some thoughtful commentary about technique, composition, and subject matter. If you are not a member of our Facebook group… we highly recommend that you join us! This is our space for sharing newsworthy information and conducting discussions (what, when, where, why and how) about Women Photographers/Artists and Street Photography, in general.

So, if you are a woman street photographer, please join our growing community… I’m sure that you will agree that we are a very enthusiastic and supportive group of women!!

This week we’re delighted to welcome Gina Costa to our Streets Ahead team, Gina has done a superb job commenting on this weeks handpicked images and Cara has once again put together an outstanding video showcase.

‘les filles’ 1:00am in Sydney – part of the 24 Hour Project by Saskia Howard (@aspiritofplace)

This photograph indeed captures the spirit and determination of these women on their nocturnal mission. The vantage point and tight cropping of the image emphasises the forward movement of these well-shod beauties as the viewer can almost hear the quick clip of their high heels. The compositional arrangement, employing an upward moving diagonal, captures the viewer’s eye and leads it forward with the action of the scene.

‘I see you- you see me by Guilia Baita (@guilia.baita)

This image beautifully captures the feel of time and place in this charmingly composed capture. Giulia’s choice of film and lens highlights the seductive, rich tones of the street. The clothing hanging on the line has its own whimsical personality as they seem to joyfully communicate with each other, yet punctuate the vertical rhythms of the composition.

‘Azul, amarillo y rojo: mar, sol, pasión por la vida’ by Monste Abad (@mabadca)

Montse’s beautiful image of a woman caught between the two worlds of sun and sea – symbolized by the blue and yellow has such a strong graphic quality to it, that it is hard to resist. The seductive, bold composition indeed shouts the title: “pasión poor la vida”!

Amplified II by Tracy Rehehan

I love how the figure of the man simultaneously emerges and recedes from the shadows – seemingly reconfigured by the light as he steps into our view. The play of light and shadow heighten the reductive element of this mysterious man, as he is really never within the viewer’s complete reach. The tonal range Tracy employs emphasises the enigmatic texture of the image.

‘I Believe I Can Fly’ by Liz Traynor (@Ferguscat1)

This image beautifully captures this isolated figure as he seemingly symbolises every one of us, perched on a sea wall – imagining, dreaming that we can fly to a kind of ethereal freedom. The monochromatic palette and the reductive compositional arrangement further emphasises this dream of flight to freedom that is secretly longed for by so many of us.

‘Intense’ by Vivi Hanson Sacerdote (@Veevs3)

This image by Vivi, entitled ‘Intense’ truly captures the energy and rhythm of the busy street. The dynamic movement of the foreground figure, isolated by the blurring of the back group activity, emphasises the intensity and sounds of this busy scene. The colours of the film combination adds perfectly to this high pitched, intense, capture.
