Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 30 – by Donna Donato
Welcome back to the thirtieth article in the column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’
All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.
Here is TheAppWhisperer’s video showcase for May 24, 2014. ‘mirror mirror on the the wall’ – Patricia Truchsess von_Patricia Truchsess Photography
This piece with its bright, cheerful colors, funhouse style reflections and track reminisce of a music box song was a delight to watch. I am sending kudos to Patricia’s son for his lovely piano solo.
‘Untitled’ – sparklingedith
Using a quad screen with a soundtrack of primarily chirping, chattering birds this video provides the viewer with fast paced superimposition of words and images.
I liked the gradual stopping of the frames until only one section has a moving image.
‘Ready to be touched’ – Ger van den Elzen Photography
As many of us know, it is possible to experience love for an inanimate object. This video appeared to be a visual declaration of that affection.
‘May the 19th, 2014’ – Vanessa Vox
Watching this piece I felt I was either underwater or riding prone in a wagon looking up as an apparition floated above me. Could easily have been a scene from a George R.R. Martin novel.
‘Shout’ – Armineh_H
Used to seeing her hand as the ‘star’ this time we get to see other extremities. Loved the rug and pedicure. Had to smile because it has been quite a while since I’ve heard the song used in this video. Move over Pharrell.
‘Summer. Joy.’ – clix2020_Clint Cline
This piece with its ‘home movie’ quality, dappled light, ambient sounds and music was like watching a memory of childhood past. It was slightly bittersweet with the hope and promise of the future and the realization that life sometimes has its own plans.
‘love at first sight (office romance)’ – odilonvert
The thought ‘love makes for odd bedfellows’ came to mind while watching this video. Hope the love object is replaced when it fades.
’Water’ – aj. vdhorst_AJ vdHorst
Really liked the visuals and sound of this piece. While watching was doubly conscious of the luxury that water is and how often many take its availability for granted.
‘Pain and Fear’ – Aldo Pacheco
For some people the thought of an appointment with this medical practitioner is anxiety producing. Better not watch this before you go or you might be quaking in your shoes.
‘Postcards from home’ – Egmont van Dyck
This video creates a silent, partial portrait of a family. Watching it I felt a twinge of sadness and wondered what journeys life had taken the people on.
‘Wandering Van Vleck’ – iCatMorris_Cat Morris
It was nice to meander the palatial grounds soothed by the music and ambient sounds of birds, water and crunching footsteps. I found this a calming and meditative way to start my day.

Donna is an image-maker, historian by training and a film/video editor by vocation. From a very early age she was smitten with images of all kinds. Donna absolutely loves film and filmmaking.
