Catherine Couturier Gallery

Several years ago, Catherine Couturier attended the AIPAD fair, where a collector asked her, “What is your gallery’s speciality?” To which she responded, “Photography.” The collector pressed further, “But what is your specialisation?” With a smile, she replied, “Good photography.”

This sentiment encapsulates her vision for Catherine Couturier Gallery: to serve as a bastion of excellence and integrity, dedicated to the medium of photography in all its forms. Her highest goal remains to showcase the finest fine art photography available.

Originally known as John Cleary Gallery, the gallery opened its doors in 1996 at its current location on Gallery Row. It quickly established itself as the premier photography gallery in Houston. Tragically, John Cleary passed away in 2008 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, but he ensured the gallery’s future by passing the torch to Catherine. She had the privilege of working alongside John for eight years as the gallery manager and director, and takes her responsibility to carry on the John Cleary Gallery tradition very seriously.

Under Catherine’s ownership, the gallery has evolved to embrace both the passions shared by John and herself, such as mid-century French street photography and children’s portraits, as well as contemporary art, which has always been her area of expertise. The range of work represented has broadened significantly, and Catherine’s artistic vision is evident throughout the gallery. It has truly become Catherine Couturier Gallery, and she takes pride in associating her name with this talented group of artists and their remarkable works.

While Catherine loves selling art, her motivations extend beyond mere transactions. Her philosophy is that it is not her job to sell anything to anyone. Instead, she aims to present extraordinary work, provide comprehensive information, and help individuals discover photographs that can enrich their lives. She finds immense joy in meeting first-time collectors who are excited about their purchases and in tracking down rare or sold-out pieces for those with special requests.

Catherine Couturier Gallery is a proud member of AIPAD (Association of Photography Art Dealers), and Catherine is honoured to be part of such an esteemed organisation. The gallery participates in AIPAD’s “The Photography Show” each spring and various other art fairs throughout the year. Additionally, she reviews portfolios for organisations and festivals, such as Fotofest, and gives lectures to both artists and collectors. She is proud to serve on the Advisory Council of the Houston Centre for Photography and its annual auction committee.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the website and reach out for assistance. Catherine looks forward to meeting new collectors and art enthusiasts.
