Satellites just got a whole lot scarier
Chinese scientists have unveiled what could be the world’s most powerful spy camera, capable of identifying faces from low-Earth orbit. Developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the laser-based system reportedly achieves millimeter-level resolution from 100 kilometers (62 miles) away—up to 100 times sharper than existing spy cameras.
During tests over Qinghai Lake, the camera captured details as small as 1.7 millimeters across. Researchers caution that results depended on near-perfect weather, and clouds or poor conditions could reduce accuracy.
Experts say the technology could allow Beijing to monitor foreign military satellites and ground-based defense systems with unprecedented precision. The study detailing the device was published in the Chinese Journal of Lasers.
U.S. companies are also pursuing high-resolution satellite imaging, though privacy advocates warn that the rise of real-time orbital surveillance could threaten civil liberties worldwide.
