Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 24 – By Donna Donato
Welcome back to the twenty-fourth article in the Column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’
All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.
Here is TheAppWhisperer’s video showcase for March 22, 2014. We would like to thank this week’s contributors: Vanessa Vox, Robin Robertis, Kachouro_Em Kachouro, TOPKON HORSEMAN and HugsNotDrugs11385_Katie Hall for their submissions. Take a look at these latest gems; you’ll be glad you did. Please share our Column with your family and friends, encouraging them to create and submit their mobile videos. We are seeking all platforms, Windows, Android, iOS… Joanne Carter and I will also be scouring the web in search of mobiles movies to present to our readers.

‘March the 15th, 2014’ – Vanessa Vox
The light-hearted music sets the tempo for this refreshing piece that made me of think of, among other things, a dance recital. The treatment of the b/w footage also brought to mind images of contemporary art where the human blends into the background. Admit it!! You liked it that time you inadvertently walked in front of the projector in a classroom or at the cinema.
‘iPhones Face 2013’ – Robin Robertis
This piece opens, well the second shot, with live-action footage of a Kayan woman weaving and is quickly following by beautiful, stylized portraits of smiling people and even man’s best friend. With its harmonica base, the music also contributes to the smile that will spread across your face.
‘Sakura’ – Kachouro_Em Kachouro
The beautiful image and fantastic audio of this short video seem almost at odds with each other. I really liked the simplicity and yin/yang nature of the piece.
‘iPhone video odds and ends’ – TOPKON HORSEMAN
Based on the title, I am supposing that visual odds and ends were woven together to take us on an excursion via various modes of transportation. The viewer is a participant rather than a daydreamer on this particular trip. I enjoyed the catchy lyrics that lead us to journey’s end, a harbor at either the beginning or close of the day.
“Puddle Run’ – HugsNotDrugs11385_Katie Hall
Who can resist a good puddle and beautiful, clear reflections? This silent b/w video presents a pair of slo-mo, jumping feet near and in a puddle. You can almost hear the shrieks, laughter and splashing water.
