Thirty years ago Donna Tart’s Ancient History was published, a book that she wrote for a period of eight years. It’s a book I constantly reread, it’s inspired by my love of Greek mythology. Told in Dickensian detail “I just thought I was writing an old-fashioned, very bizarre book that was to no one’s taste except my own. I was writing it for myself and my friends,” Tartt expressed. It’s a literally thriller, powerfully well-paced and absolutely unputdownable. If you’re looking for an escape, go here. Mobile Photography & Art Flickr/Instagram Showcase – 18 September 2022
Why does anything exist at all? I’m an optimistic, don’t worry, but it’s a question which we all spend our lives trying, increasingly strenuously to avoid. Human life, is always held up against the massive fact of nature, impervious and indifferent to man. If we knew our exact end of life date, would we live our lives differently? When humans have brushed up closely to death, they have lived differently. I know that I do. I was lucky to survive at 24 years old with very serious liver tumours and luck really did play the main part in my survival. Consequently, I have felt on borrowed time ever since, I…

I get a bit too excited when beetroot season is in full swing. I celebrate with variations on concoctions of dishes (disclosure – I love to cook). After I’ve got past the Lady MacBeth hand scrubbing moment, I slice it really thinly, brush with oil and roast in a hot oven but as we are having a huge heat alert, this weekend I really don’t want to use the oven. So, I’ve decided I can either make beetroot gnocchi, with mashed potatoes, beetroot, flour, salt and oil and cook on the stove or I can go full out with the barbecue and create a beetroot, chickpea and halloumi salad, I…

This week my favourite book publisher, MACK books sent me their title SCUMB Manifesto by Justine Kurland, to review and I love it! Inspired by Valerie Solanas’ iconoclastic feminist tract SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men), SCUMB Manifesto introduces us to photographer Justine Kurland’s own uncompromising initiative: the Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books. And she does just that, books by 150 white straight men are cut up and reconfigured into her own intricate interpretation. Books by Stephen Shore (American Surfaces), William Eggleston (Los Alamos), Larry Clark’s (Tusla), Martin Parr’s (Think of England), Alec Soth’s (Sleeping by the Mississippi), Brassaï’s (Paris by Night) and last but not all, Robert Frank’s (The…
