‘App’ Is Voted Most Powerful Word Of The Year – We’ll Really Happy About That At The ‘App’ Whisperer

We’re really pleased to hear that the American Dialect Society has voted the word ‘App’ as the word of the year for 2011. As we all know the word ‘App’ is an abreviation of the word ‘Application’ and of course naturally is one of our favorite words. The shortlist of words may surprise you and we have listed the runners up below.

Some years it is easier for a clear winner to emerge said, Allan Metcalf from the American Dialect Society, for example in 2001, the winning word was ’9/11′.

Last years ‘Word of the Year’ was the word ‘Tweet’ – the ‘Word of the Decade’ went to Google.

Some previous winners include "millennium bug" (1997), "information superhighway" (1993), and "web" (word of the 1990s).
Web words are so popular that even the techie prefix "e" — as in e-mail — won in 1998.
