Streets Ahead – Seventh Edition

We’re delighted to publish the Seventh Edition of Streets Ahead, the wonderful Women’s Street Photography Column that we publish each week. If you would like to join the Streets Ahead Flickr group, please go here.

The enthusiasm and support for this collective has been tremendous – and we can’t thank you all enough! Our membership in the Flickr group is now over 100 and keeps growing every week.

For this week’s showcase, we thought it would be far more interesting to present a quality sampling of the work that was submitted, instead of selecting only 10 “favorites.” Please note, however, that we simply couldn’t help but comment on a few photographs that jumped out at us… you’ll find those images below with the showcase beneath them.

And if you feel compelled to share your thoughts, please do! (especially on the topics of composition, colors/tones, subject matter, bordered frame vs. borderless, etc.) This is OUR collective… and the more voices that are shared (and heard,) the better! We have recently set up a Forum for our column, so if we get really wordy we can move our discussions over there.

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this presentation… and we look forward to meeting you all back here next week!’

Nice Arms
by Odilonvert (Jennifer Sharpe)

The minute I saw this photograph, I fell in love with it. The rhythmic pattern of lines has almost a musical quality to it… and, for me, the colors elevate this photograph to a beautiful graphic . If I wasn’t familiar with the OG Hipstamatic and double exposure feature I’d swear that Jennifer worked hours on compositing this image from several different sources. Fantastic photograph, Jennifer! You’ve inspired me to drum up a little courage and give these Hipsta features a try. :-)

Lady with the green roller in her hair.
by Congarose (Connie Rosenthal)

Now here is a genuine character from a John Waters film!! I love every single detail about this image…. right down to the upside bottle of hand sanitizer hanging from her purple bag! I think Connie’s choice of filter for this shot harmonizes the colors nicely. And the square crop is absolutely perfect for this composition. What a gorgeous shot, Connie!

Silver Jubilee
by Lee Atwell

I think this is a beautifully composed shot. Not only did Lee hone in on the highly graphic quality of the red, black and white… but she also captured some slight glimpses of street life in the window reflections. I just love the red background … and I couldn’t help but smile that the man in the hat was looking at a picture of a woman in a crown. Beautiful lines and shapes in here, Lee… and beautifully seen!

Esperando // Waiting. De fondo el escaparate de La Colmena, una de las pastelerías históricas de Barcelona.
By mabadca (Montse Abad)

I think this is a fantastic photograph of personalities, body language, textures, tones and patterns. I don’t think Monste could’ve staged a better composition! I really appreciate her choice of b&w for this picture, because it keeps our eyes focused on the tones and lines. There are just so many visual treats in this photograph… I simply don’t have enough space to itemize them all. And to be honest, I’m actually more interested in learning what everyone else’s observations are!
