Repeat Timer Pro

media_1328558413999.png

Artem Lapitski, creator of Repeat Timer Pro – the acclaimed utility app for the iPhone – has published an extensive behind-the-scenes case study on the project, providing a rare insight into what goes into planning, designing, developing and marketing an iPhone app.

Welcomed with raving reviews since its release, Repeat Timer Pro is a simple but versatile timer app with a secondary interval timer and repeat settings, making it the perfect timer for virtually any application. In addition to well thought-out functionality and intuitive controls, the app features a beautiful interface wrapped in tasteful sound effects and animations that makes it a pleasure to use.

The visually rich case study that spans over ten screens provides an inside look into the various aspects of developing an iPhone application, as well as a rare glimpse into the marketing strategy and its results. Beginning with a brief bio about the creator, independent designer Artem Lapitski, the introduction reveals how the idea for the app came about and what went into planning its functionality. The case study then details the design process of the app, presenting and describing the evolution of the interface. Following notes on development, the final part describes the marketing strategy behind the app – pre-launch promotion and specific marketing initiatives undertaken to promote the app following it’s release. What developers are likely to find most interesting, however, is the annotated graph of the app’s sales that reveals how each marketing initiative affected downloads at the App Store – usefully information that is very hard to come by.

Listo

media_1328558474353.png

Listo, an iCloud powered list-making app for the whole family that keeps lists up-to-date on all your devices, is taking a giant leap forward in terms of accessibility with the introduction of integrated VoiceOver support.

With VoiceOver usability improvements integrated into the apps recent update, Listo is also now fully usable by the unsighted.

“The app was useable before with VoiceOver turned on, but it was impossible to mark items as completed or not because the app’s swipe gesture was overridden by VoiceOver,” explains Derek Gour, owner of SlippySoft Inc., the maker of Listo. SlippySoft Inc. specializes in developing highly-functional, well-thought-out apps for the iPhone, iPad and Mac.

After receiving feedback from customers, Gour customized some behaviours for when VoiceOver is turned on, and now the app can be used completely blind.

Like many highly technological incarnations of low-tech functions, list-making apps vary wildly in quality and functionality. In addition to being accessible to the unsighted, Listo is one of only a few list-making apps that make use of iCloud integration. But what really sets Listo apart, according to Gour, is its simplicity.

“People really like the uncluttered, natural feel of the interface. It looks like paper, and when you swipe, items are crossed off. There is a great feeling of satisfaction that comes from crossing things off. Completed items fly to the bottom of the list. There aren’t a bunch of extraneous features bogging it down, but at the same time, careful attention has been paid to every detail,” Gour says.

“A list should be simple: Add items. Cross items out. And your list should be wherever you are, on whatever device is handy. Anything more than that is clutter.”

SG Project OnePage

media_1328559933718.png

FourthFrame Technologies today is pleased to introduce SG Project OnePage 1.0 for iPad, the latest addition to their series of Simple Genius project management apps for Mac OS X and iOS. The Business app’s one-page approach is extremely powerful, because its constraints force project managers to focus on what is most important, enabling them and other stakeholders to quickly absorb the status of each project. Featuring flexible import/export and sharing, the app is an ideal solution for keeping management and sponsors/clients up to date.

SG Project OnePage uses a novel approach to documenting and managing projects called 12-by-12 Project Management, in which each project is represented on a single page, in a very specific format. The page has 12 horizontal rows that represent 12 tasks that make up the project plan. In the vertical direction, there are 12 columns that define time blocks. Each Project has a start date/time and a time scale. The time scale can be hours, days, weeks, months, quarters, or years. For example, one project may start at 10 a.m. on the first day of the year and run for 12 hours, and another project may start on the same date/time and run for 12 months.

Each of the 12 tasks can be assigned an Owner so that it is clear who is accountable for that part of the project. And the format supports tracking planned and forecasted costs, cost variances for the whole project, green/amber/red status indicators, project objectives, and overall project status comments. By design, the text fields in SG Project OnePage, such as Task Names, Project Objectives, and Project Status Notes are limited to two compact lines of text. This forces users to be very concise and choose each word carefully in order to communicate the full status. The result is a consistent, high level, and complete picture of the status of any project on a single page. For some projects, the 12-by-12 format will be adequate and a great tool for managing the project. In other cases, the format is useful as a top-level reporting tool, where a more detailed plan is maintained using another tool, such as SG Project Pro.

Ball Turret Gunner

media_1328560656512.png

Hendrickson Software Components (hsc) today is thrilled to announce the release and immediate availability of Ball Turret Gunner, a shoot ’em up iPhone game. Ball Turret Gunner is a realistic shooting game where the player flies in the ball turret of a B-17 bomber and attempts to protect their bomber from enemy aircraft until the bomber gets over its target and can release its bombs.

Enemy aircraft will attack from all sides, and the player must respond to the crew member’s warning and destroy the attacking aircraft before the attacking aircraft destroys the player’s bomber! Bandits – 2 o’clock! Climb into your ball turret and defend your B-17 until it can deliver its ordinance over the hated enemies war infrastructure … You have to be fast, accurate, and have sharp eyes to make it to the bomb run.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps’ expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing’s design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances.

The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command’s nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.

Cut the Buttons

media_1328560999535.png

Open Name Ltd. announced that their hit game for the iPhone, Cut the Buttons, will be going free for one week starting today.

The game, which has both an iPhone and iPad version, has been incredibly successful since its release, quickly becoming the number one iPad game in Russia, as well as one of the top ten iPad games in China’s App Store.

The concept is deceptively simple: using a pair of scissors, users must snip and cut buttons on pieces of fabric, and catch them in a cup. Players get bonus points or extra lives for every hundred buttons that land in the cup. However, as the scraps of cloth carrying the buttons fly across the screen, players also have to make sure they’re not trying to snip off the buttons attached by a bolt. Leaving more than three buttons on a cloth will end the game.

Featuring two different modes of play, Arcade and Classic, the game also boasts a multiplayer option, allowing you and friend to simultaneously cut buttons as they appear on the screen.

This special offer will only last for one week, so gamers are encouraged to go check it out as soon as possible.
