Catherine Restivo & JQ Gaines Join The App Whisperer As New Columnists

We’re delighted to welcome both Catherine Restivo and JQ Gaines as Columnists to theappwhisperer.com. They will co-edit one unique column. Both Catherine and JQ have been involved with theappwhispererer.com for a long time and are frequently featured in our Flickr Group Showcase with their stunning images. We are huge fans of their creativity, their integrity and perhaps most of all their commitment to mobile photography.

In their own words, this is how they describe their brand new column with us….

‘Everyone knows that a photograph tells a story.. which most of the time ends up speaking louder than words. But even though we think we know what’s going on in a photograph (no matter how obvious it appears), the story we walk away with is really defined by our personal perspectives and/or biases. For example: where someone may see tears of sadness, someone else may see uncontrollable laughter… or where someone experiences a sense of tragedy from an abandoned building, another may feel exhilarating excitement in the treasure trove of textures, colors and abstract shapes.

parallel || perspectives was conceived as a collaborative space in exploring how two artists creatively develop their impressions from passing glimpses of strangers, buildings or even objects, using the same image. And what image will be our starting point? Nothing other than The Streets of New York City… a city dear to our hearts. Do we know where this is going to take us? Absolutely not. But what we do know is that we welcome and encourage dialogue from all as we embark on this journey… ‘cuz we know there are a lot more impressions out there than ours.’

We’d love for you to learn more about Catherine and JQ, so please page down and read their bios. We recently welcomed Richard Gray, Misho Baranovic, Dan Marcolina, Keith Tharp, David Hayes, Teri Lou Dantzler, Richard Koci Hernandez, Rudy Vogel, Kevin Kuster, Laura Peischl, Dilshad Corleone, Mel Harrison and Star Rush as Columnists to theappwhisperer and we will have a few more announcements to make very soon.

We are growing at a phenomenal rate and trying to include as much unique content and variety from the mobile photography world as our readers can possibly digest, you really don’t need to go anywhere else!

Please join us in welcoming Catherine and JQ to theappwhisperer family, welcome…

Catherine grew up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest on a small island north of Seattle, where her days were spent making forts in the woods or roaming the rocky beaches gathering shells and driftwood, and when she became a teenager, attending the obligatory keggers in someone’s barn or on the beach. 😉

She has always loved photography, and growing up was her family’s primary photographer, snapping away with their Kodak Instamatic. Her first “grown-up” camera was a Canon AE-1 that she used to capture life in New York. She purchased her first iPhone in 2010, and since discovering it’s camera and the amazing world of post processing available in the palm of her hand, a creative door was opened in her life.

Catherine now spends most of her spare time taking photos with her iPhone 4, apping photos, sharing photos, being inspired by other artist’s amazing creations, and participating on the many online iPhoneography sites and blogs. Her iPhoneography home base is www.mobitog.com. Currently a proud Staff Member, she landed at MobiTog in August 2011 and discovered a creative community of like-minded iPhoneographers who helped her learn and grow, and more importantly, make wonderful new friends.

Her work has been featured at the LA Mobile Art Festival 2012 held at the Santa Monica Art Studios; Giorgi Gallery in Berkeley, CA; SOHO Gallery for Digital Art in NYC; First Annual iPhoneography Miami Exhibition at Artspace Gallery Miami; “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” at the Lunch Box Gallery in Miami, FL; Studio b. Light Impressions; Mobile P1xels Show at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art; she was a semi-finalist in the 2011 IPA Mobile Art Grant; was included on iPhoneogenic’s list of the 50 Top Mobile Photographers/Artists of 2011; and has been featured in The App Whisperer, Lys Foto Magazine and many other popular mobile photography websites.

After studying painting and printmaking at Pratt Institute, I owned and operated a Book Arts and Textiles studio in NYC. I worked there for about 15 years, dividing my time between designing and creating one-of-a-kind books and teaching traditional bobbin lacemaking techniques. However, after my husband and I had our first child, I decided to put my career on hold. But three years ago my husband and kids surprised me with an iPad and iPhone, insisting that I was “too old-fashioned” and needed to “get with the times.” They clearly knew something I didn’t, because these devices immediately impacted my life – and in a big way. They rekindled my deep passion for painting… and introduced me to Photography. Never, in a million years, did I think that I would incorporate photography into my work. But it’s all I do now. And the best part is: I don’t have to try and steal time from my family to retreat to my studio. Instead, I carry my studio with me everywhere I go… in my pocket.
