Sheldon Serkin Joins TheAppWhisperer as a New Columnist for StreetWise

We are delighted to welcome Sheldon Serkin as a new Columnist to TheAppWhisperer.  We have long been admirers of Serkin’s photography and he is regualrly featured in our weekly Flickr Group Showcases. Sheldon is heading up our brand new mobile street photography column entitled StreetWise.  As our regular readers will know, we have a very popular women’s mobile street photography group entitled, StreetsAhead. This is uber popular and is edited by Cara Gallardo Weil and Gina Costa. We wanted to launch StreetWise as an open group for all mobile street photographers, whatever their gender.

Serkin has been a mobile street photographer in New York City since 2010. In 2014, he was named the Grand Prize winner and “Mobile Photographer of the Year” in the Mobile Photo Awards, placing first in the category of Street Photography (see image below). His work has been has been featured on numerous mobile photography related websites  He is a contributor in The Art Of iPhone Photography book by Bob Weil and Nicki Fitz-Gerald (Rocky Nook 2013), His photography was also featured The Chicago Center for Literature and Photography Journal. Serkin is currently preparing his first book of street photographs, entitled Awful Bliss. He posts daily on instagram, eyeem and flickr as @shelserkin. Joanne Carter is a British photographer, photography journalist, editor and curator and the founder and editorial director of TheAppWhisperer.com, an independent international photography publication established in 2009.Her journalism, criticism and commentary have appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, Vogue Italia, LensCulture, Popular Photography, Android Magazine, NikonPro, DPReview, Which Digital Camera and Which Camera. She has lectured internationally on photography and mobile art, served as a juror for international photography awards, and exhibited her own photographic work across the UK, Europe, South Korea and the United States.Alongside her editorial work, Joanne's photographic and postgraduate research explores death, grief, memory, representation and social inequality through contemporary photography, participatory practice and visual research methods, with the longer-term aim of developing this work through doctoral research.Through TheAppWhisperer, she continues to publish independent photography journalism spanning contemporary photographic practice, mobile imaging, photographic apps, computational photography and emerging imaging technologies.Joanne is available for editorial commissions, photography projects, judging, curatorial work, speaking engagements, consultancy and selected collaborations.
