Mobile Art – ‪A Stream of Consciousness – iColorama and Procreate‬ – by Carolyn Hall Young

A Stream of Consciousness in literature means to emulate the passage of thought through your mind without any inhibitors. The idea being that deeper patterns of order develop and emerge. Virgina Woolf used the stream of conciousness technique significantly in her work. In her novel, Mrs Dalloway, Woolf’s aim was to give readers the impression of being inside the mind of the character – an internal view, illuminating the plot.

Carolyn Hall Young has created this mobile art portrait using the same technique but in artform. As this video plays you will see how Young’s fragmentary and impressionistic responses flow through the portrait. What is fascinating to me is the complex evocation of the inner states of Young’s consciousness, a subliminal level renders the flow of a myriad of impressions. I imagine her feeling a sense of calm and connectedness with the world around her as she paints.

Enjoy!

“I was just having fun, making this video. While I was playing, I was not thinking about saving versions, for publication – I just kept a few versions that I liked. Part of what I was trying to show, in the video, was the adventure, the freedom, flexibility, and nimbleness of exploring visual ideas, within these apps”. Carolyn Hall Young, 19/01/16.

I think it comes from our working in natural media, and bringing that process to pixels.

Such joy watching you think and rethink, Carolyn! I find I am gaining patience the more you share these kinds of process-vids. I get lost, sometimes, and don’t trust that I’ll find my way through the 40-60 variants… and I abandon the work for days or weeks when I get frightened that way. What the hell, huh? You are a marvel to me, dear one.

Meri, I think it helps other people to see that every solution not just magically land in my lap, but sometimes knowing when to keep a happy accident is part of the art in it. It is not all about control, sometimes it is about letting it go!

Well, awesome! After that said–I loved the dance through many variations. What a wonderful thing about our digital media, that one can explore and try so many different looks and approaches. It is immeasurably instructive viewing your visual progressions, a priceless learning experience, plus an incredibly joyous one, with the great music enhancing the video. I admire and am enriched by your art and your generosity of spirit. Thank you.
