Could You Be The Next Magnum Photographer?
Becoming a Magnum photographer is what many photographers dream of and rightly so. It is one of the most prestigious photography co-operatives in the world. Each member has undergone a rigorous process of self-selection in order to become full members. Members include Elliott Erwitt, Martin Parr, Alec Soth, Tim Hetherington and there’s many more.
Magnum is currently accepting portfolio submissions for review, during their annual member meeting in June 2019. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if they would accept a mobile photographer? If you’re interested in applying, you need to submit 2-3 projects, project descriptions and a biography by January 2019. You must not submit more than 80 images. If you would like me to review your submissions, or help you in any way, before you submit, then please contact me (I will have to make a small admin charge for this service) but I would love to help.
This would just be the first step, the process of becoming a full member to Magnum Photos takes a minimum of four years. Photographers are only considered once a year, during Magnum’s Annual General Meeting in June, where one day is set aside for considering and voting on potential new members’ portfolios.
Magnum Photos accepts portfolio submissions from all international professional photographers but the most successful applications are made with the support of existing member photographers.

Joanne Carter is a British photographer, photography journalist, editor and curator and the founder and editorial director of TheAppWhisperer.com, an independent international photography publication established in 2009.Her journalism, criticism and commentary have appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, Vogue Italia, LensCulture, Popular Photography, Android Magazine, NikonPro, DPReview, Which Digital Camera and Which Camera.
