Mobile Photography – TrueView Interview – ‘Why I Create Self Portraiture with a Smartphone’ with Violet Martins from Brazil
Our TrueView Interview section is an area where we ask one singular question, to mobile photographers and artists and it is captured to video. This time, we asked accomplished Mobile Photographer and Artist, Violet Martins from Brazil to consider and answer ‘why I create self portraiture with my smartphone’. Martins created the video below and replied in text to this thought, “The reason I take self portraitures, is because I can! I don’t have to ask and I can edit as I imagine as I go on“. I would say that knowing Martins, as I do there’s more to this than meets the eye. If we are to consider that for many, the female impulse to struggle free from social and belletristic confinement, through strategic reformulation of the individual, art and society, then through this paradigm of self portraiture we can observe how it distinctively complements female anxieties, we’ll be a little closer…

Joanne Carter is a British photographer, photography journalist, editor and curator and the founder and editorial director of TheAppWhisperer.com, an independent international photography publication established in 2009.Her journalism, criticism and commentary have appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, Vogue Italia, LensCulture, Popular Photography, Android Magazine, NikonPro, DPReview, Which Digital Camera and Which Camera.
