Mobile Photography – Instagram TAKEOVER with @cawestruck – Carol Wiebe – Days 8 and 9 – the story so far…

We are so excited with our latest Instagram TAKEOVER this time with @cawestruck – Carol Wiebe. She is a highly respected and talented artist and has been granted full access to our Instagram account and she has done such a magnificent job. We are very proud of her! Please take a look at her Instagram feed to see what an incredible artist she is.

On Day 8 @cawestruck highlighted the work of talented mobile photographer and artist @barbaranebel – Barbara Nebel and she writes, “Barbara simply excels at whatever style or subject she chooses. Her floral images are so clean that you are sure you could feel the soft velvety texture if you touched a petal. Her crisp photographs capture intriguing stories. I especially love it when she starts to layer on the effects, because she manages them with her usual finesse and flair. This particular image illustrates one of Barbara’s styles that I adore: the distorted figure is examining art, perhaps taking a photo of it with her mobile device. Texture abounds in this image, but the smudges and marks are handled with the control of one who can always find the sweet spot between too much and too little. Attention to detail is Barbara Nebel’s not so secret weapon: you can count on her to choose the style and effects particularly suited to any given image with creative aplomb.”.

Later on Day 7 @cawestruck highlighted @andrewbwhite – Andrew B White’s  very fine work and she writes “There is such a wonderful juxtaposition between the cracked and stained pavement, the rusty pipes, and that dapper gentleman in his crisp black suit and hat. He appears to be navigating his way through the landscape of grungy textures with absolute confidence. Add dappled light, casting its intricate shadows, and you have an image that is, to my eye, as fascinating as it is beautiful. Andrew White regularly takes candid shots in his walks through Brooklyn and New York City, documenting the people and places around him with an artist’s eye and a musician’s sense of rhythm”.

As if things couldn’t get better on Day 8, then @cawestruck highlighted our Portrait of an Editor, @ilemusi – Ile Mont’s very fine art and she writes “The sense of vertigo in this image is palpable. Everything is elusive. You cannot be sure of anything: there appear to be two figures, and they seem to be upright, but the swirling energy around them gives no point of reference for their surroundings. The one figure, ostensibly female, may be ascending an escalator, a ladder, a set of stairs. Or, she may be taking off on wings of light, perhaps to escape the disorienting effects of vertigo. In any case, viewing this image rendered me deliciously dizzy and full of queries, but free to insert my own story, thus gifting me with a very enjoyable experience!”.

Then on Day 9 @cawestruck highlighted the work of talented mobile photographer and artist @mschnidman and she writes “Mark Schnidman calls himself “a man with a phone that thinks it’s a camera.” If you peruse his feed, you will see that his phone is largely used to document his every day life, although he does not shy away from using his imagination, either. Mark transforms these photos into paintings by his skilful use of apps, or maybe into photos that think they are paintings. In any case, his personal story keeps growing. I like the way he perceives things: his composition, the way he plays with color as well as texture. And, if you follow the link provided, you will see a greater emphasis on his more playful, fantastical side. This geek can make digital art!”.

Later on Day 9 @cawestruck highlighted the work of another of our favourite mobile artists @janisbrandenburg – Janis Brandenbury Lee and she writes “Janis Brandenburg Lee is a prolific artist who will try just about anything, digitally speaking. Her varied subject matter and styles reveal a fertile mind and wide ranging imagination. She is also incredibly friendly and approachable, ready to share what she has learned, and generous with her comments of other artists. In this particular image, called “The Strength to Let Go,” Janis presents a portrait that is a landscape, with a reflection of that landscape in the sky, suggesting a communication between the two that is somehow providing needed strength. We do not know what is being let go, and do not need to. We can readily provide examples from our own lives. The curving lines seem like a kind of energy, which the birds are utilising or perhaps even creating, as they join the mystical dialogue going on here. We happily join it as well”.

With much aplomb towards the end of Day 9 @cawestruck highlighted @remintrusions – Damian De Souza (think Francis Bacon and it gets you close to his work), this is what she writes “Damian De Souza does weird, creepy, and unusual so masterfully that he arrests you into immobility, as you try to wrap your mind around any given image he is presenting. Bobbi McMurry described his work perfectly when she said, “He seamlessly incorporates disparate parts and pieces to form twisted, torn and unsettling imagery that’s impossible to ignore.” The image featured here appears more straightforward than many of his others; less densely populated with fractured and distorted elements from architecture, a favourite source of infill, if you will. De Souza takes pleasure in the fact that his images manage to express emotion, to suggest an interior life. I know that I feel something stir within me as I study his work. I imagine my inner self as replete with images of all I have seen and thought, often jumbled, sometimes distorted by memory or emotion. It is as if De Souza has scooped out a handful of this inner stuff and attached it to a face, or a body. He has made the invisible visible, available, accessible. That is quite an accomplishment, and he has done it over and over again. Do not miss his gallery”.
