This week, I’d like to talk with you about courage and it’s scary, being creative is a path for the brave. If you lose courage, you lose creativity. Each one of you has hidden treasures within you, as do I and we need to bring them to light and it takes a lot of faith and hard work, not least devotion. It’s important to say ‘no’ at times, I suppose, not that I’m one for that, it’s easy to say ‘no’, you’re off the hook but if you say ‘yes’ then what happens? It’s showtime! There are times, when you might need to lay low, as I have this week, many will notice my work output has slowed, I’ve been very unwell but that’s ok and do you know, why I know it’s ok? Because I have fierce trust in myself, I know I am a success with what I do, I believe in myself, I have had to and I know that I have so much more to do and so much further to go. The one thing you must never do, as a creative, is turn around and walk out. You show up, you do what you can in the time you’ve been allotted and you do it to the best of your ability and that’s what I’ve done today, with this weeks magical mobile photography and art showcase, I have tried my best to put this together, for all of us, although I am still unwell. You invited me to this party and I’m here to stay. Enjoy!

If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here. It hasn’t happened many times to me, but the strength of desire was too strong to ignore, irresistible actually. I had to return to the beginning of The Parisan and start all over again and this time, when I reached the end, the feeling to begin again and was even stronger than the first time. This is a masterful debut novel by Isabella Hammad, it’s historical fiction. A young man, a Palestinian is sent by his father to study medicine in France at the beginning of the First World War. He spends several years in France, liberating and transformative years before returning to Palestine. Along the way, he falls in love, perhaps it could be said, more than once, haven’t we all? The prose is exquisite and Hammad’s ability to paint a scene is as exquisite as the artists in this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, literally have. Their work is as complex as this novel, closely observed, elegantly created, assured and captivating. Enjoy!

All the players in this weeks mobile photography and art showcase come together in a heightened climax whilst simultaneously unravelling within an orgy of sight and sound. There’s a sense of joy thats imperative throughout, as we begin at the end with an an image, untitled by I Rome, lending a certain panache. It revels in nostaligic as it glides overwrought with energy matching the earnest angst of the narrative, complemented by the mournful strains of Veda Gail’s ‘Falling Too’. This energy is tangible within the showcase; as a refreshingly invigorating and unvarnished romance, underscored with a hint of tragedy and thrumming with anxious life. Bravo!

This weeks thrilling and thoughtful Mobile Photography and Art showcase projects a sense of artists maintaining their fidelity to the human race, whilst all around many are losing faith, it is at the heart of everything. Each work of art chosen here has a stake in our world. There are counterweights and balances as joy emerges in the work here. This storytelling is far more alive to the possibility of hope, of relationships, uncomplicated love and connections, each representing the intimacy of the long years of support that our community brings to one another. Welcome back to our sixty fourth post in our Tickle Your Fancy section. Tickle Your Fancy includes a round-up of between ten to twelve key links to articles from around TheAppWhisperer over the past few two weeks, ones you may, by chance, have missed.

Just to explain the title for this section Tickle Your Fancy is an English idiom and essentially means that something appeals to you and perhaps stimulates your imagination in an enthusiastic way, we felt it would make a great title for this new section of the site.

To be excellent at anything, it must cost you something“, a direct quote from ‘In Pieces’ by Sally Field. A book that she spent seven years writing, without ghost writers, unusual for her circle. This book made me weep this week. It’s a beautifully written intimate memoir as well as a gut wrenching self portrait, bordering on a personal investigation. Now at 71, Field felt the compelling need to assemble her fragmented past. Contrast that with ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney, another book I have been reading, a future classic by all accounts and a book the BBC are working on for a new tv drama. It’s a story written in less than one year, showing what it is to be young and in love at any time. It too bought me to tears. I’m always quite close, the price we pay… Whilst putting together this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, each carefully chosen image is so fascinating, assuming and expressing the status of work of art. I like to think of these images as characters I compose with and elevate them to stage, with a realist meticulousness and luscious concern for detail, invoking a narrative of uncommon richness and intensity with a radical reframing of the purpose. Enjoy.

“If you’re paying attention and making your own life as beautiful and rich and fun as it can be, you might just attract someone who’s doing the same thing, you can give up on tracking someone down with your butterfly net.” Words by Anne Lamott, who married this week at Deer Park Villa, in Fairfax, California. She met her husband through a dating site, called OurTime, a matchmaking site for the over 50’s. She had been single for a long period and felt absolutely no wanton feelings to change that. When asked, by the New York Times writer, Lois Smith Brady, 26th April 2019, why she stayed single so long, she replied that she was shy and introverted and hated leaving the house, particularly for parties.“If I go to a party, I become a Roz Chast character with my arms hanging at my sides and I feel like I’m developing a tic,”. Lamott has has published 18 memoirs and novels, many about being a recovering alcoholic, single mother, perpetual worrier and late-in-life churchgoer. I’ve read many of her books, you knew that was coming, right? I read incessantly, there’s only one thing that frustrates me about reading and that is that I can’t write and view images at the same time. I’m good at multi-tasking but not at that. Perhaps, it’s a learning difficulty, yesterday morning I spent many hours supporting one of my children as they undertook an updated private disability assessment with an acclaimed consultant, to enable them to successfully progress onto the next stage of their life. Feeling emotionally, mentally and physically drained post test, we both later collapsed at home, for a while. Disability diagnoses, if necessary, are crucially important when navigating this world. So many obstacles appear very quickly insurmountable without the correct support and often are but with it, you can fly.

What I love about Lamott, is she is a fighter, as I am, as my family are, we are a strong and very healthy, positive, loving unit, that’s not to say, life is easy because it is not but we try to focus on the things that really matter, whilst simultaneously fighting to keep the wolves from the door. Smith Brady, closed her article in the New York Times describing Lamott  as ,’A natural cheerleader, especially for underdogs’. Lamott later posted on her Facebook page, “never give up, no matter how things look or how long they take. Don’t quit before the miracle.” And so, I say to all of you incredibly talented mobile photographers and artists out there, I can reveal, very candidly that there is a miracle opening here and I am going to ensure you’re all cordially invited to be part of it, it is coming and I am very excited. Stand by me, there is ecstasy in paying attention.

When my eldest son was at boarding school, there was the most incredible sensory garden for all the children to enjoy, it was an empowering experience and helped many of the children to blossom. A sensory garden has the ability in many ways to become a sensory room. If you’re not familiar with the umbrella term ‘sensory room’ they are essentially rooms, with special lighting, music and objects, a therapeutic place, one of safety in which to deescalate experiences and promote self care, resilience and recovery.  When we view art, it’s important to use all five senses too, as much as possible, to not just look and move on but to really try to understand the image, to get into the picture, literally.

Mobile art is as much about presence as the senses, about the awareness of what it is to move through it. Whether the artist themselves has fully utilised all of their senses when creating the art, we can heighten our own experience by not only cascading into the picture but by creating circumstances in which that might happen. When we participate in life with all our senses, whether we are in a sensory garden, a sensory room, viewing art, or making love, it is a far more rewarding form of participation and one that you will feel all the better for by throwing yourself into.

In keeping with my New Year Resolutions, this week you’ll find me at the Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel,  as I start preliminary judging the Pink Lady Food Awards.

What is remarkable about your vision, as mobile artists, is that it remains intensely human rooted in common experience, replete with doubt, frustration but also conjoined with belief and certainity. Characteristics demonstrative of our obsession with this new medium. As your journey through this weeks showcase to the centre of the lyrical and artist narrative, your destination alludes to the ultimate climax and is swiftly tempered by the safety of its harbour.
