Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 23

Welcome back to the twenty-third article in the Column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.

”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’

All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.

‘Rockin’ – Armineh_H

Watching the beringed hand in this piece conjured up images of dancing teenagers. I could easily imagine each digit flitting about in bobby socks, saddle shoes and poodle skirts. Indeed, Nat King Cole is in the house.

This piece with its cheery, upbeat music, intriguing visual style, somewhere between moving shadows and a children’s storybook, will make you smile. All those walks aren’t just discharging one’s duty but are also acts of love.

‘InstaWorldBCN’ – fernandoprats

fernandoprats offers a fast paced, stylized glimpse of a panel discussion held in Barcelona. Watching the quick cuts of panelists presenting their ideas and afterwards engaging in animated discussion with attendees piqued my interest. I, too, wanted to be a participant.

‘Hamana Lake’ – TOPKON HORSEMAN

With its muted colors, wistful, epic film music and shots of beautiful, deserted landscapes, this piece evokes memories of another time. The blurry edges of the shots and absence of human activity re-enforces the notion of a trip down memory lane.

Have to mention that when I read the titles of Vanessa Vox’s pieces I tend to think of journal entries. I always look forward to viewing the newest entry. Her latest work feels like a b/w, animated sketch that sometimes slides into the twilight zone. I constantly had the sensation of walking backwards in an alternate reality while watching someone cavort in front of me.
