Mobile Movies Showcase – Week 32 – By Donna Donato
Welcome back to the thirty-second article in the column, Mobile Movies. We at TheAppWhisperer have been inspired by the Flickr upgrade of 1 Terabyte of storage for everyone and have wanted to launch a mobile movie section for some time. Now seems to be perfect, the new Flickr upgrade will allow for a full three minutes of 1080p HD quality video per single film and you can have as many as you have storage space for. Each week I (you can find me on Flickr here) will curate the movie uploads to our new Flickr group –MobileMoviesTheAppWhisperer – I will view all the videos uploaded and comment on the chosen ones.
”The internet has created other crossroads for films and videos. Mobile devices have democratized not only photography but also video-making. The availability of apps that give digital video the appearance of analogy film, such as grainy black and white super-8, is exciting and important. Now anyone with the desire can make a home movie or ‘film’ and upload it to the web. It is interesting to see what stories and messages people are creating and disseminating.’
All of the entries were either shot or created on mobile devices.

‘The Cart’ – Cara Gallardo Weil
In this b/w sometimes sepia, slightly faded video I felt as if I was hovering over a small segment of a street watching the almost featureless passersby skirt a large object. I liked the way most people barely glanced at the cart all except one man who touched its handle.
‘Sabina’ – Aldo Pacheco
This octa-screen video captures a young girl’s visit to a shoe store. It’s a sweet moment that will certainly be cherished by Sabine and family in years to come.
’Snack’ – aj. vdhorst_AJ vdHorst
While not a supporter of the golden arches I nonetheless liked this animation of the vanishing burger(s). The wrapper written in Dutch also lent a slightly exotic touch to the piece.
‘Ode to Nina Hagen’ – Armineh_H
This black and white piece with its tight shot of the lower portion of a woman’s face makes the viewer feel like a lip reader. I wondered if the voice I heard was the onscreen person or if she was lip-synching a Nina Hagen song.
‘In the eye of the beholder’ – Clearer Reflections_David Hayes
This silent montage of a of an eye regarding something I couldn’t quite make out brought Dali to mind. Even though still images were used I found myself waiting for a blink.
‘Be Strong’ – iCatMorris_Cat Morris
This brief piece shows a lovely flower, both fragile and strong, being batted by the wind and despite it all the flower prevailed. Perhaps it serves as a symbol of our human existence.
‘jump’n fly’ – anders_1960
Combining moving and still images this piece takes us along on an airborne trip. This is probably the closest I’ll ever come to skimming across the sky without being in an airplane. Liked catching a quick shot of the shooter’s foot as he panned the camera across the open fields below.
‘Rainsand’ – Matthew Wylie
The flattening raindrops, which spread and moved down the window combined with the anticipatory music created a mesmerizing 15 seconds. I could have watched and listened much longer.
‘…sometimes it goes faster to walk…’ – auque_Ake Bruce
This piece shows a man on his Harley Davidson as he tries to maneuver through traffic. It’s the first time I seen this kind of motorcycle ‘riding’ and the title really says it all.
‘car.rou.sel’ – Poetic Medium
This video with its small group of rotating, rider less creatures and slightly distorted, somewhat crazed sounding music felt more like a fright ride than one taken for soothing pleasure. For me, the quad screen the beast passed through added to the slight discomfort.
‘The long-forgotten Trailer’ – Hans Borghorst
This piece provides a quick glimpse of what at first appeared to be a long abandoned trailer, perhaps a former home of circus performers. After seeing some of the contents inside I suspect the trailer might serve as a place of refuge or sort of clubhouse.
‘All Alone (Liar)’ – Diana Nicholette Jeon
Liked this fast paced video with its upbeat music and geometric shapes superimposed over darker images that appear to be portraits. The last image looked quite familiar, as many of us have ‘assumed’ this position.

Donna is an image-maker, historian by training and a film/video editor by vocation. From a very early age she was smitten with images of all kinds. Donna absolutely loves film and filmmaking. Currently she lives in Paris, a city that has had a long and passionate love affair with ‘the movies’ and is one of the crossroads for world cinema.
