How to Get Started with Portrait Photography

Portrait photography can seem daunting to get into, but with some basic gear and a bit of practice, anyone can start taking beautiful portraits. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get started with portrait photography.

Choose Your Camera

You don’t need the most expensive camera to take great portraits, but you will want one that allows you to control exposure settings manually. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses gives you the most flexibility. For beginners, cameras like the Canon Rebel series or Nikon D3000 series are great affordable options. A lens with a focal length between 50mm to 85mm is ideal for a flattering perspective.

Learn Basic Photography Settings

Learn how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect your images. A wide aperture (low f-stop number) will blur backgrounds and keep your subject sharp, while a faster shutter speed can freeze motion. Adjust ISO for proper exposure based on lighting conditions. Get comfortable shooting in aperture priority mode so you can control the depth of field.

Study Lighting

Pay attention to both natural and artificial lighting. Direct sunlight creates harsh shadows, so shooting in open shade is more flattering. Window light and reflectors nicely illuminate subjects. Learn simple lighting techniques like three-point lighting (key, fill, and backlight). Reflectors bounce natural light onto shaded areas of your subject. You can start with an affordable basic reflector kit and flash.

Practice Posing

Posing is a crucial skill for flattering, polished portraits. Study sample poses and learn how minor adjustments in body positioning, facial expressions, and hand placement can dramatically affect the look and feel of an image. Avoid stiff, unnatural poses by allowing some space between parts of the body. Have your subjects relax in between shots.

Choose Your Subjects

Consider whether you want to focus on adults or kids, or perhaps you like the idea of photographing older people. If so, visit your grandmother at her senior living facility and ask permission to photograph the residents.

Portraits are about capturing personality, so connect with your subjects beforehand. Engage in genuine conversation, crack jokes, and allow time to get comfortable together. This creates trust and puts subjects at ease so their personality shines through. Take some candid shots as you chat to warm up.

Look for Great Locations

Don’t just default to shooting portraits against a blank wall. Look for interesting backdrops that complement your subject and style. Urban and natural settings, interesting textures, or pops of colour can elevate your portraits. Pay attention to the time of day for optimal lighting. Scout locations ahead of time if possible.

Start Shooting!

Once you have the basics down, start practising on willing family and friends. Experiment with poses and locations to see what works for you. Don’t be afraid to try new things or make mistakes – every shoot will build your skills and style. Review your work after each session and identify areas to improve. Stay motivated and keep shooting portraits to hone your craft over time.

Portrait photography is an art, and like any art, it takes practice and patience to master. However, a passion for capturing the essence of your subjects through eye-catching portraits makes the learning process incredibly rewarding. So, grab your camera, study quality portrait work for inspiration, and start shooting! With persistence and consistently working to improve your skills, you’ll be on your way to taking standout portraits.
