Female in Focus Photo Competition – Final Deadline Imminent!
This is your final opportunity to share work that reflects what it means to stand on the edge of change. This year’s theme, On the Cusp, is about transitions – both quiet and radical. It’s about the moments before something shifts, the space where transformation takes root.
Whether you’re documenting personal milestones, social unrest, cultural identity, climate breakdown, motherhood, grief or recovery: this is a call for work that sees the world clearly, and doesn’t look away.
| Selected images will be exhibited in 2026 at PhotoIreland in Dublin and 10.14 Gallery in London. Work will be reviewed by a jury of industry leaders, including Alessia Glaviano (Vogue Italia), Jess Baxter (Tate), Kimberley Moulton (Tate Modern), Kennedi Carter, Nancy Janes (Hahnemühle), Carolyn Mendelsohn and more. Series winners will receive a Nikon Z Series mirrorless camera and two NIKKOR Z lenses, and for the first time, a People’s Choice winner will be selected by public vote and featured in an exclusive interview on 1854.photography. Joanne Carter
Joanne Carter is a British photographer, photography journalist, editor and curator and the founder and editorial director of TheAppWhisperer.com, an independent international photography publication established in 2009.Her journalism, criticism and commentary have appeared in The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, Vogue Italia, LensCulture, Popular Photography, Android Magazine, NikonPro, DPReview, Which Digital Camera and Which Camera. She has lectured internationally on photography and mobile art, served as a juror for international photography awards, and exhibited her own photographic work across the UK, Europe, South Korea and the United States.Alongside her editorial work, Joanne's photographic and postgraduate research explores death, grief, memory, representation and social inequality through contemporary photography, participatory practice and visual research methods, with the longer-term aim of developing this work through doctoral research.Through TheAppWhisperer, she continues to publish independent photography journalism spanning contemporary photographic practice, mobile imaging, photographic apps, computational photography and emerging imaging technologies.Joanne is available for editorial commissions, photography projects, judging, curatorial work, speaking engagements, consultancy and selected collaborations.
