Streets Ahead – Thirty First Edition – Mobile Street Photography

Welcome to the thirty first edition of “Streets Ahead,” a weekly column dedicated to women mobile street photographers. Each week we review and curate work that was submitted to our Flickr Group. In addition to creating a showcase video which features a sampling of submitted work, we also highlight a few images that caught our attention… offering some thoughtful commentary about technique, composition, and subject matter. If you are not a member of our Facebook group… we highly recommend that you join us! This is our space for sharing newsworthy information and conducting discussions (what, when, where, why and how) about Women Photographers/Artists and Street Photography, in general.

So, if you are a woman street photographer, please join our growing community… I’m sure that you will agree that we are a very enthusiastic and supportive group of women!!

Hope you enjoy this week’s showcase…

‘Sunday at the marina (7)’ by Candice Ayoub Chidiac (oneday123)

I love the retro feel of this image. The composition works beautifully – the lines of the wall, the horizon and the three subjects, the couple and the child. The couple are obviously engrossed in each other, the man looks like he is very involved with telling a story. I like that Candice caught the eye of the child, who is sitting apart from the couple, and facing the opposite direction. One wonders if she is even with them although being so small, it doesn’t look as if she could get up on the wall without any help! I like that the tones of the wall are so pale, and the greys of the sea and the sky allow the contrast of the figures to stand out.

“Follow the yellow line!!!” by Grace Brignolle (GraceieeB)

When I saw that Grace was in Paris from some of the photos that she was posting I immediately thought to myself “I can’t wait to see her photographs of Paris”! How perfect is the zig zag of the bright yellow line against the cobblestones leading up to the figure walking at the end of the line? Lovely composition, very evocative of the back streets of Paris. Beautifully seen Grace!

Perfect use of juxtaposition. The “Are u scared” on the wall, if interpreted in one context can give an element of creepiness to the story – the little girl on a bike, smiling as she hangs on to the grown up – she is smiling but if he was an abductor this certainly wouldn’t be a smiling matter! However I prefer to think of this as a happy story – a father and his daughter – “Are u scared” – is she scared to be on such a big bike where her feet can’t touch the ground? I think not – she looks perfectly composed and happy to me… nicely seen Heline!

The shiny metal of the wall of the building creates a lovely light here and draws the eye to the figures. We can get a sense of the immensity of the structure that they are walking alongside. The blurriness of the background and the tones give an element of mystery – creating a very atmospheric backdrop. I love that the figure in the middle is looking up – probably admiring the lines of the building. Lovely!

“Brooklyn Kids” by Anne-Martine Parent (MartinaP)

I love the exuberance of this image. Anne-Martine has caught the kids perfectly in mid run. It feels like a happy moment – a big smile on the face of tallest child who is behind the others. Is it a race or are they just having fun running to get to their destination? Sometimes it’s nice to see people running just for fun and not for exercise. Lovely light and tones – a nice warmth with the rust coloured wall in the background.

Wonderful light captured here – sunlight streaming down and lovely long shadows. It looks like a very cold winter’s day but one can almost feel the warmth looking at the rays of sunshine. I like the pattern of the grid of the pavement against the shadows and shape of the cane adds a nice touch.
