    Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 16 January 2022

    2022-01-16 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 16 January 2022

“In these last decades ‘concerned’ photography has done at least as much to deaden conscience as to arouse it”, Sontag, S. On Photography (1979). Sontag argued that beleaguering the public with sensationalist photographs of war and poverty was a definitive way to numb the public’s response. Sontag believed that the more distressing images people viewed, the more immune they became to their impact; viewers became reduced to inaction, either through guilt or a dismissive lethargy towards making a difference. Sontag reversed this view in Regarding the Pain of Others (2004), but ‘compassion fatigue’ is still used as an argument against war imagery today. I have been thinking about this a…

    Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 9 January 2022

    2022-01-09 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 9 January 2022

I like to create targets for myself, that way, it helps me to keep on schedule and achieve what I intend to do. For so long, I’ve been reading one book a week and by doing so, it allows me to travel, throughout the world, there’s a sense of freedom I experience with each page turned. This week I’ve been reading a novel about economic migrancy, called The Road Home. A subject we’re all aware of but so often ignore. The author Rose Tremain tackles the issues brilliantly. The main character, Lev is 42 and has left his Russian home following the recent death of his beloved wife from leukemia…

    Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 19 December 2021

    2021-12-19 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 19 December 2021

Eighteen months and it still goes on, some say worse now than ever before. I’ve not started disinfecting the groceries again yet though and hope never to start.  It is interesting to learn of the impact the pandemic has had on mobile art. We have have asked and published some answers to that by award winning artists here and also in another series here. What seems ever more important is how connected we all are and how much we care for one another. Many of us have experienced isolation, confinement, even claustrophobia and especially depression. Our walls enclosing us, as our government’s fail to govern. We remember our first trips…

    2021-12-12 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 12 December 2021

This is a magnificent showcase, pulsatingly alive and beautifully displayed, it reinforces my opinion that there are few artists out there with the dexterity or emotional intelligence to rival that of the mobile artists displayed here. If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr showcase, please submit it to our dedicated group, here. Alternatively if you’re an Instagram user just tag your images with #theappwhisperer and we’ll pick you up. What is remarkable about your vision, as mobile artists, is that it remains intensely human rooted in common experience, replete with doubt, frustration but also conjoined with belief and certainity. Characteristics demonstrative of our obsession with this new medium. As your journey through this weeks showcase to the centre of the lyrical and artist narrative, your destination alludes to the ultimate climax and is swiftly tempered by the safety of its harbour. This showcase is at the frontier of the world of mobile photography and art. Enjoy! If you would like your work to be considered for entry into our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr showcase, please submit it to…

We’re Donating 25% of Net Proceeds to Charity – Strut Safe

2021-11-26 / Comments Off on We’re Donating 25% of Net Proceeds to Charity – Strut Safe

Today, until midnight (GMT) Tuesday 30th November 2021 we are donating 25% of all net proceeds from our online gallery to Strut Safe, a charity dedicated to getting women home safely across the UK. It is an organisation founded by Rachel Chung and Alice Jackson following the murder of Sarah Everard in South London in March 2021. Now with over fifty volunteers across the UK, Strut Safe is able to offer free walks home in Edinburgh, as well as a free phone service for the entire UK. There is much work to be done to dismantle systemic violence against women and other marginalised groups. Strut Safe is an initiative to…

Mobile Photography & Art – Happy Thanksgiving Post…

2021-11-25 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Happy Thanksgiving Post…

Happy Thanksgiving! We’re reviving and in some cases refreshing our mobile photography and art thanksgiving post of previous years because it’s as relevant today as it was then. Although we do not officially observe Thanksgiving here in the UK, for me personally, it offers another excuse to send love and gratitude to our beautiful community. Without your art, your thoughts and your daily leaps of courageous self-expression, TheAppWhisperer would not exist. In this article mobile artists have expressed their thoughts in words and images representing what mobile photography and art means to them and considered what they’re thankful for in relation to it.  Some have mentioned our wonderful community, some…

It is the high calibre of talent shown throughout this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Showcase that spells liberation. The potency of these raw artists crystallises this era’s insurgent shifts in photography and art. Unapologetically, we present this weeks showcase, kicking open the door to your heads and your hearts, with narratives of power, desire, and independence into the view of the brave and unbridled, socially assertive lives that we all share today, Enjoy! Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 14 November 2021

    2021-11-14 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 14 November 2021

“Never say you know the last word about any human heart”, a quotation by Henry James from the rich tapestry of a book I am currently re-reading, Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Art links all around us and we need to be able to tie it altogether, to make it whole. Human expression within this weeks mobile photography and art Flickr Group Showcase, speaks to us. Worldly wise, yet perilously frail, many of these images demonstrate the agony and ecstasy of love and life lived. This weeks showcase is a wholly humane romance and a worthy treat for all of us. Enjoy! If you would like your work to…

    2021-11-07 / Comments Off on Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr/Instagram Group Showcase – 7 November 2021

I recently completed an essay addressing how the visual work of Rosy Martin, informed by psychotherapeutic theory, links personal memory to the construction of self. I will publish it soon but
it concludes “notable psychotherapist, Sigmund Freud had two photographs on his desk, one of a patient looking well, hopeful and healthy at the start of therapy and another at the end of their therapy looking dejected, depressed and beaten by life. Freud encouraged his patients to bring him their dreams, one cannot help but ponder, knowing what we now know of phototherapy, whether bringing their photographs would have made this therapy more accessible“. Having always walked to my own…
