Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 7 January 2018
“Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties“, writes Erich Fromm, one of the most prescient thinkers of the 20th century. Love and creativity play a huge part of my life and it is physical. Love of art, the art of loving, irrational, intellectual, obsessive, insightful. Professor Semir Zeki, a neurobiologist at the University College London, proved in a series of pioneering brain-mapping experiments that viewing art triggers a surge of dopamine, the feel-good chemicial, into the orbito-frontal cortex of the brain, resulting in feelings of intense pleasure, the same part of the brain that is excited, when we fall for someone, romantically. For all of us associated with…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 3 December 2017
In the UK we have a literary award of which, it is of no honour to win. It is the Bad Sex Award and each year since 1993 an author is honoured who has, in the opinion of the judges, produced an outstandingly bad scene of sexual description, in an otherwise good novel. The results of which, I always find interesting to read, notwithstanding the reviews too. Is it wrong to find it laudable? This year one author and writer for The Guardian, Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett claims the thought of being awarded the bad sex award has inspired her to work harder, she writes, “Many women are acutely aware of…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 26 November 2017
The transformative power of art mingled with love heighten the potential of our quotidian lives, when we consider Mobile Photography and Art, our untapped potential is as defiant as it is understated. We have produced an exquisitely crafted Showcase this week, beautifully restrained pictorial about love, loneliness and loss is caressed sensitively as we empathetically chronicle not only the characters who grieve for people not only absent from their lives but also for the desires they have by default relinquished, whether sexual or emotional. New love affairs represent another version of our future, trilogies of desire, reconciled as we expedite our lives. Stay in the present, they tell us, be…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 19 November 2017
Laying the foundations of Mobile Photography and Art, this weeks Flickr group showcase is as much a meditation on great art as it is also of human passion. Every artist, moreover, perhaps every human knows, has experienced, is experiencing or seeking, passion. Passion does not have to mean sex, or ‘intelligent sex’ as Robert Mapplethorpe described his ‘ideal passion’. No passion for art is a seduction in itself and when you view this showcase, free from all constraints, you will experience the intense relationship, each artist has not only with their art but also with each of us. Enjoy! Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 1 October 2017
Shallow sleep dreams are the sources of many of my best ideas, when my pillow starts to vibrate, I set the long snooze function, hovering between consciousness. Once I have an idea, I scrutinise, explore and practice it. I then reshape that idea into other forms of art, dance, music, stage, I keep it turning for more and more possibilities. I develop a script and then I deliberately lose it, an idea is only a map, to find the treasure I have to walk it, experience and develop it. Development then takes on another form, it cannot be produced from a place of safety, that’s just dull. Locations have emotional…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 10 September 2017
As I created this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group showcase, Orfeo et Eurydice: Melodie for Piano Solo performed by James Rhodes played and soothed me, this beautiful rendition will likely reduce you to tears. Rhodes is a highly accomplished concert pianist and a man whose personal memoir is so raw and harrowing that the court of appeal initially prevented him from publishing it, the ban was lifted and his book ‘Instrumental: A Memoir of Madness, Medication and Music‘ which includes a Spotify playlist, is a heartbreakingly difficult read. Music saved Rhodes and he makes no bones about it. ‘Plot 29‘ by Allan Jenkins, Observer Food Monthly editor is…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 3 September 2017
“Individuals often withhold help because they are uncertain about whether beneficiaries will appreciate their assistance. Expressions of gratitude can signify that a beneficiary values, needs, and accepts one’s assistance. Previous research has shown that grateful feelings enable people to savour positive experiences, cope with stress, and strengthen social relationships. A disposition toward gratitude is also associated with higher levels of subjective well-being, demonstrating that counting one’s blessings can increase positive emotions and health”, Francis Flynn, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at Stanford. Appreciation is one of life’s great motivators, when we take the time to let people know that we value them, it naturally inspires them to continue doing even more.…

Mobile Photography & Art Flickr Group Showcase – 23 July 2017
“The desire for security and the feeling of insecurity are the same thing. To hold your breath is to lose your breath. A society based on the quest for security is nothing but a breath-retention contest in which everyone is as taut as a drum and as purple as a beet“, as said by Alan Watts in his book ‘An Antidote to the Age of Anxiety’. As we are drawn to this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, we witness artists’ security and their insecurities. Essentially, in this world, there is no security and yet we are all guilty for trying to grasp at it. Our anxieties are linked to…
