It hasn’t happened many times to me, but the strength of desire was too strong to ignore, irresistible actually. I had to return to the beginning of The Parisan and start all over again and this time, when I reached the end, the feeling to begin again and was even stronger than the first time. This is a masterful debut novel by Isabella Hammad, it’s historical fiction. A young man, a Palestinian is sent by his father to study medicine in France at the beginning of the First World War. He spends several years in France, liberating and transformative years before returning to Palestine. Along the way, he falls in love, perhaps it could be said, more than once, haven’t we all? The prose is exquisite and Hammad’s ability to paint a scene is as exquisite as the artists in this weeks mobile photography and art showcase, literally have. Their work is as complex as this novel, closely observed, elegantly created, assured and captivating. Enjoy!

Thank you to all the talented artists for submitting your works to our showcase this week. After scoring a hat trick, I am back! As some of you will have noticed, I was off last week. Not one to take life easy, I managed to cram it with, Mother’s Day, my 50th birthday and a serious lung infection. An accomplishment even by my own standards. The lung infection leading the way, I spent my days and continue to do so, (desperately trying to avoid another hospital admission), dosing up with antibiotics, sleeping sitting upright (it can be done, I’ve learnt, once complete exhaustion sets in) and reading a wide variety of books. I got it down to two books every two days, a record for me. This is all in sharp contrast to the preceding two weeks where I, at least felt like, flew around Amsterdam and swanned around Paris, with a scrum of journalists in close contact throughout, trying, initially politely, to avoid some persistent esoteric amorous advances. No doubt, the grounds I picked up the lung infection but that’s a little unjust; I feel quite hip these days, sharing a serious autoimmune disease with a raft of celebrities. ‘Lady AppWhisperer‘, has a bit of a ring to it, don’t you think? The main treatment for serious autoimmune diseases (for the uninitiated) are strong immunosuppressant drugs. These are delivered to my home address every two weeks, straight from a refrigerated van, handed to me in person and placed immediately into my own fridge (middle shelf, with nothing touching the contents, ‘not too close to the back, front or sides‘, my nurse voiced, as she inspected my placement). Then every two weeks, I inject myself, the fun part is I get to select the location, will it be my left or right thigh this week? Or perhaps and I’m still striving to gain confidence, will it by my abdomen, just along from my tummy button, hmm – the mental battle continues for that one. The result is that in order to reduce the immune system attacking itself, my immune system is reduced to next to nothing, therefore, any bugs floating around, once caught, take quite a bit of shifting and this lung infection is still lingering and I foresee, will continue in a similar vein for the next week or so. It’s proving to be the hardest secondary illness I’ve had, since original diagnosis to eliminate…

Speaking of books, one was bought for me this week by my eldest son, Jake, ‘Do No Harm’ by Henry Marsh. It’s a book by a neurosurgeon (Henry Marsh) of forty years and once picked up, hard to put down. Perfect when you’re confined to bed. Reading the accounts and surgeries of his poor patients, certainly helped to keep my own predicament in perspective. One quote from this book stays with me “Anxiety might be contagious, but confidence is also contagious” and of course, that’s what we strive so hard, to build here at TheAppWhisperer for the community of talented mobile photographers and artists that share their work with us. This weeks mobile photography & Art Showcase is a bumper one (I missed last week, see above), as it plays out, you’ll view, what is sure to be called, a ‘superbly original and exquisite spellbinding twenty first love story’, asserted by many of the major mobile photographers and artists operating in our world today. It’s pure poetry, mysterious and yet glittering, enjoy!

There’s much humour to be had at my nightstand, not least in the morning when my husband duels with balancing fresh coffee on the piles of books and there’s a particular book, which I feel should be on every woman’s nightstand ‘Milk and Honey’ by Rupi Kaur. It’s a book of poetry, about healing and hope, discussing themes of love and loss, bringing about an enlightened self. Kaur ends the book with a tender love letter to her readers, thus reads “you have made it to the end. With my heart in your hands. Thank you. For arriving here safely. For being tender with the most delicate part of me. Sit down. Breathe. You must be tired. Let me kiss your hands. Your eyes. They must be wanting of something sweet. I am sending you all my sugar. I would be nowhere and nothing if it were not for you. But was too afraid to be. Do you have any idea how much of a miracle you are? How lovely it’s been and how lovely it will always be? I am kneeling before you. Saying thank you. I am sending my love to your eyes. May they always see goodness in people and may you always practice kindness. May we see each other as one. May we be nothing short of in love with everything the universe has to offer and may we always stay grounded. Rooted. Our feet planted firmly onto the earth”. This book will certainly not be everybody’s cup of tea, I know that and I am overlooking it. If it helps just one of you, then I am happy to mention it here.

Thank you to all the talented artists for submitting your works to our showcase this week, it’s one of true splendor. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.

Photographer, Mary McCartney (Paul’s daughter), with whom I used to work at a London photo agency said, I’m embarrassed to say that my main camera is my iPhone”. That’s not to say she doesn’t use 35 mm film, a Leica in fact, or a DSLR, even a Polaroid, but what she loves about her iPhone is ‘how immediate it is‘. Contrasing with Grayson Perry, artist confession, ‘the cameraphone has made the forest of glowing screens ubiquitous in museums, galleries and at events. Maybe I’m a snob, but it’s put me off photography’. We take thousands and thousands of pictures, every single day, do we treasure them? Some we do, each represents the power of time, mortality and memory, in essence, the power of photography. It’s very nature, evokes like no other art form, the split second, already spent…

Enjoy this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Showcase, a few minutes [for you], of time very well spent.

“I love the people I photograph. I mean, they’re my friends. I’ve never met most of them or I don’t know them at all, yet through my images I live with them.” Bruce Gilden

Hello Everyone!

Thank you for submitting your images to StreetWise Flickr group for our ‘Winter Showcase.’

We were touched by the soulfulness and warmth of your photos – beautiful winter scenes (whether in tropical or snowy settings) of people (and animals) looking out windows, windows as frames, windows reflecting cityscapes, people in public transportation, carrying umbrellas, lone figures in urban landscapes and photos of people connecting hand in hand, or embracing one another. Even in the often darker, bleaker times of the winter months, when taking street photos can present a challenge, so many of your images captured what it means to be human – our fragility and our connection to one another.

We are inspired by this international group and it is our honor for Ilana and I to curate so many wonderful artists from around the world, and to ultimately, share the showcases with you.

Ilana and I find it very difficult to choose such few images for the showcase from all those that were submitted and we want you to know that we appreciate each and every post!

As a reminder, we choose images for the showcase that are in keeping with our group’s intention and guidelines focusing on key aspects of street photography composition, timing, juxtaposition, catching the decisive moment rather than relying on too much aping or images that are more art oriented or painterly.

If you are a street photographer, please consider joining our growing community. To those new to our community, welcome – it’s great to have you join us!

Please continue to post your images to StreetWise Flickr group for showcase submissions:

https://www.flickr.com/groups/2750883@N25/pool/

Please note that StreetWise Facebook page is NOT for posting photographs but for sharing information/discussions, thank you!

A special thank you to Joanne.

We hope you feel inspired by this showcase and our wonderful group. Until next time, happy shooting everyone!

Many congratulations to the following artists for being featured in our showcase including:

A work of remarkable cinematic scope, this weeks Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group Showcase portrays an unusual mix of qualities, combining powerful social realism with poetic lyrical resonances that derive from precise imagery and fascination with cultural observations. Revealing the challenges of life around the world right here, right now, at a time when women’s lives in particular are becoming substantially illimitable. ‘We tell ourselves stories in order to live’ wrote Joan Didion, one of America’s greatest essayists and that’s true, of course but in my mind, we create imagery in order to breathe. Enjoy!
