Apple Introduces Studio Display XDR With 5K Retina XDR, Thunderbolt 5 and 120Hz Refresh Rate

Apple has introduced a new generation of professional displays, including an updated Studio Display and the all-new Studio Display XDR. Designed for photographers, filmmakers and creative professionals, the displays feature 5K Retina XDR technology, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity and improved HDR performance, expanding Apple’s lineup of displays built specifically for Mac workflows.

The new display family combines advanced display technology with integrated camera, audio and connectivity features, aiming to provide a complete front-of-screen experience for both everyday users and professional creators.

Studio Display XDR: Apple’s Most Advanced Pro Display

The newly introduced Studio Display XDR is designed for demanding professional workflows, including HDR video editing, colour grading, design, photography, and 3D animation.

At the centre of the display is a 27-inch 5K Retina XDR panel with a resolution of 5120 × 2880, delivering extremely sharp detail and high dynamic range.

Studio Display XDR features:

  • 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display

  • Mini-LED backlight

  • 2,304 local dimming zones

  • Up to 1000 nits SDR brightness

  • 2000 nits peak HDR brightness

  • 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio

  • 120Hz refresh rate

  • Adaptive Sync support

The mini-LED backlight enables precise brightness control across thousands of dimming zones, allowing highlights to appear brighter while shadows remain deep and detailed.

According to Apple, this technology significantly reduces halo and blooming effects often seen in traditional LED displays.

Advanced Colour Accuracy for Creative Work

Studio Display XDR has been engineered to meet the needs of creative professionals who require accurate colour reproduction.

The display supports both P3 wide colour and Adobe RGB, making it suitable for:

  • professional photography

  • print design

  • HDR video editing

  • colour grading workflows

Apple says the display also provides more than 80% Rec. 2020 coverage, helping creators work confidently across multiple colour standards.

Smooth Motion With 120Hz Refresh Rate

Another major upgrade is the addition of a 120Hz refresh rate, enabling smoother motion when editing video, browsing complex timelines or working with graphics-heavy applications.

The display also supports Adaptive Sync, which dynamically adjusts refresh rates between 47Hz and 120Hz, improving responsiveness and reducing visual latency.

Built-In Camera, Audio and Desk View

Both Studio Display and Studio Display XDR include a 12-megapixel Centre Stage camera, which automatically keeps users centred during video calls.

Apple has also included Desk View, a feature that simultaneously shows the user and a top-down view of their desk — useful when demonstrating creative work during meetings or tutorials.

Audio is handled by an integrated system that includes:

  • Studio-quality three-microphone array

  • Six-speaker sound system

  • Spatial Audio support

  • Four force-cancelling woofers for deeper bass

This setup allows the display to function as a complete video conferencing solution without requiring additional accessories.

Thunderbolt 5 Connectivity Expands Mac Workflows

Both displays support Thunderbolt 5, offering faster data transfer and improved connectivity for professional setups.

Users can connect multiple displays and accessories through a single cable.

Key connectivity features include:

  • Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable included

  • Up to 140W charging

  • Two additional USB-C ports

  • Support for daisy-chaining multiple displays

Apple says users can connect up to four Studio Displays, delivering nearly 60 million pixels of combined display resolution when used with compatible Mac systems.

Studio Display: The Ideal Companion for Mac

Alongside the new XDR model, Apple has also updated the standard Studio Display, which remains designed for everyday creative workflows.

The display features:

  • 27-inch 5K Retina display

  • Over 14 million pixels

  • 600 nits brightness

  • P3 wide colour

  • 12MP Centre Stage camera

  • Six-speaker Spatial Audio system

The display includes a tilt-adjustable stand and can be configured with a tilt-and-height-adjustable stand or a VESA mount adapter.

An optional nano-texture glass finish is also available to reduce glare in bright environments.

Studio Display vs Studio Display XDR

While both displays share similar design elements, the Studio Display XDR targets more demanding professional workflows.

Studio Display

  • 27-inch 5K Retina display

  • 600 nits brightness

  • P3 wide colour

  • Thunderbolt 5 connectivity

Studio Display XDR

  • 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display

  • mini-LED backlight

  • 2000 nits peak HDR brightness

  • Adobe RGB support

  • 120Hz refresh rate

The XDR model, therefore, offers significantly higher brightness and contrast for HDR production and advanced creative work.

Environment and Sustainability

Apple says both displays were designed with environmental responsibility in mind.

They include:

  • 100% recycled aluminium in the stand

  • 80% recycled glass

  • 100% fibre-based packaging

These efforts contribute to Apple’s goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire supply chain by 2030.

Pricing and Availability

The new displays will be available to pre-order beginning 4 March, with availability starting 11 March.

Pricing starts at:

  • Studio Display — £1499

  • Studio Display XDR — £2999

Both models are available through Apple’s online store and Apple Authorised Resellers, with optional nano-texture glass and multiple stand configurations.

Final Thoughts

With the introduction of Studio Display XDR, Apple continues expanding its display lineup for creative professionals working with Mac.

The combination of mini-LED XDR technology, 2000-nit HDR brightness, 120Hz refresh rate and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity positions the new display family as one of the most advanced front-of-screen solutions currently available for photographers, filmmakers and designers.
