Vivian Maier for the first time in Italy by Giulia Baita

After its discovery and success in the United States, Vivian Maier, the French nanny who took pictures extraordinary, arrived in Italy. It was not Rome or Milan or Florence to host the exhibition dedicated to her, but a small village in Sardinia : Nuoro. Thousands of visitors who knew very little about Vivian Maier found a beautiful exhibition, with hundreds of photos, 10 videos, notes, a video interview with the testimonies of those who knew her personally. It was great to see both her authentic Brownie camera and her selfies on the glass and her notes on the photos.

She had an extraordinary eye for capturing those details of daily life, that normally escape our attention. She lived in both Chicago and New York and her photos are an extraordinary insight into the life of the 50s, 60s, 70s. No matter how many journalists had already written about her and her remarkable story: it was definitely exciting to see her photos! Most, ten videos that show films in Super 8 or 16 millimeters were displayed on a wall. Recount scenes of everyday life of the city, as people walk, talk, or read the newspaper. The sharp and extraordinary Vivian Maier’s eye tell us the society sometimes sarcastically, some in a amused way and some others in a curious way.

The exhibition will continue its tour of Italian and European cities. Many things are still be discovered about this amazing woman with a life so mysterious, a female talent that had been hidden for a long time, but now has a place among the great photographers of the twentieth century.
