Mobile Photography – Xiaomi Mi 8: Challenging the Best – SmartPhone Review – DxOMark with Kevin Carter

Share

Some of you may know, many of you do not know, my husband Kevin Carter is a photographic technical expert and journalist. He works at high level imparting his knowledge, never compromising his journalistic objectivity, it’s one of the many things we share (Sociologist Michael Schudson suggests that “the belief in objectivity is a faith in ‘facts,’ a distrust in ‘values,’ and a commitment to their segregation”).

As well as that, he’s an editor for DxOMark and he’s just completed his latest report which includes an in-depth analysis of the Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone camera. Its resulted in an overall score of 99 points, the Mi 8 offers some improvements in certain areas over Mi MIX 2S launched earlier this year, placing it shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best smartphone cameras that they have tested.

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, it comes with camera hardware specifications that are identical to the Mi Mix 2S. The rear-facing camera module features twin 12Mp cameras, one a wide-angle with a 1/2.55-inch size sensor and 1.4µm pixels and an f/1.8-aperture lens, and the other a short “tele” with a slightly ‘slower’ f2.4 aperture.

Its Photo sub-score of 105 is among the best that they’ve rated, thanks to consistently good performance in all lighting conditions, super-fast and accurate autofocus, as well as bold color rendition. It strikes a nice balance between noise and texture, too, and generates pretty decent low-light results.

If that’s piqued your interest, you can read his full report here.

More Than 50% of British People Avoid Tourist Hotspots According to Recent Research

Share

A report commissioned by Huawei to celebrate the recent launch of the P20 Pro handset, reveals that more than half of British people avoid photographing some of the most beautiful locations abroad whilst on holiday. This report was conducted in respect of holiday destinations within the UK.  We are extremely short of space, here in the UK and overcrowded most of the time, so it’s not altogether surprising that we don’t wish to queue to take shots while we have some free downtime, sadly. The report goes on to say “UK tourists spend a collective 25 million hours just to queue, view and photograph landmarks, nearly half (45%) are becoming increasingly frustrated trying to capture the picture-perfect holiday shot. The younger generation in the UK are the most anxious age group when it comes to capturing that perfect photo, with 76% of 18 – 24 year olds becoming stressed and 1 in 10 taking up to 400 photos on average during their getaway to capture the ultimate shot”.

According to the Huawei report, these are the results:

Mobile Photography – Instagram TAKEOVER with @italianbrother – Days 8 – 10

Share

We are so excited with our latest Instagram TAKEOVER this time with @italianbrother – Dilshad Corleone from England, UK. He is a respected and very talented mobile street photographer. @italianbrother has been granted full access to our Instagram account and he is doing a very impressive job. We are very proud of him!

On Day 8 he selected a wonderful image by @iphonefineartphotography and he writes “I remember walking down the shores of Kent, on a windy wintery day, huge swollen waves of a cold sea rising majestically, and this old man, with his Sherlock Holmes’ hat and a Barbour parka, relentlessly fighting the bitter chill, with the hope of a big catch, I thought; yet, when approached I asked him why, and he merely said it’s good for the soul, the only moment of utter freedom in a prison society. He was true, and true is this photo! Thank you for tagging!”

On Day 9 he selected a wonderful image by @jujufolies and he writes “Long time ago on an autumn’s night, a face, memories of days passed, the drops of rain, that sound, your face, the smile, your eyes, a love story in the making… or maybe not… so many questions… thank you for tagging!!!!”

On Day 10 he selected a wonderful image by @sevenography and he writes “Portrait photography and poetry have a lot in come, both inspire strong feelings!!!! They make you stop and wonder, think, ponder, they want to make you want more! And same is the case for this wonderful and mysterious shot! Thank you for tagging!”

Please take a look at our @TheAppWhisperer Instagram account to follow all the goings on and please also tag your images with #TheAppWhisperer, so that they can be found and potentially featured.

Mobile Photography & Art – Flickr Group Showcase – 27 May 2018

Share

This whole showcase is theatre. We open with ‘Red Heart (peel)’ by highly accomplished mobile artist, Poetic Medium who describes her inspiration of her work (in our interview in full here), as ‘the poetry of modern living’. It is an expression of the beliefs of the majority, I would say. Poetic Medium, understands that art should be experienced by both body and mind, by hands, touch as well as eyes and sight. This showcase expresses this view, my curation is not always to create something wholly new but to draw attention to what is already there. As you penetrate this body of art, you’ll become aware of its fluidity and this has something to do with the generosity and openness that we share and embrace within our community of mobile artists.  Enjoy!

Thank you to all artists for submitting your works. If you would like your work to be considered for entry in to our weekly Mobile Photography and Art Flickr Group, please submit it to our dedicated group, here.
